TRUE Nitromethane is over $60/gallon. How much did you put in?

Nitromethane is actually the equivalent of extremely low octane. It is WAY more volatile than gasoline, and will ignite if hit by a hammer.

One of the reasons that Top Fuelers run so rich is to prevent pre-ignition with the nitro load that they run nowadays.

And besides, excessive octane would slow the car. Remember that octane is a combustion inhibitor, meant to counter act high-compression ratios/high spark advance. Adding nitromethane to a car setup for a certain octane rating will defeat the octane's ability to do these things.

Right on the money. All that octane is, is a fuel abilitly to resist detonation. So if you're not detonating, higher octane won't help..

one neat thing about pure nitro though, under high compression, think top fuel car with 15:1 compression and 30psi of boost, you can actually just dump teh stuff in adn it will ignite no problem. it's own instability allows it to release it's own oxygen to assist with combustion.
i really doubt any typical speed shop has real nitro around. most tracks don't even sell teh stuff because in most states you need a hazmat license to even carry it.
most likely what he is talking about is nitro blend, which actually does contain soem nitro, not much, but i have been told it can make a noticable difference in your trap speeds.

iknow summit and jegs both used to sell it, the name is actually Nitro Blend. if your local speed shop has it you will find it near the fuel additives. it comes in a really goofy looking can, looks liek a can of paint thinner.
