Carb to TBI with a catch
Carb to TBI with a catch
Ok, I'm quite ignorant when it comes to mechanical issues, but I'm trying to learn, so please bare with me here.
I'm considering parting out my car, to strip it down and later put an 8 cylinder in it. I have the upcoming winter to think about it. I was selling my car, but I started doing some body work on it (there was a little incident, and some parts of my front end are no longer appealing to potentional buyers
) and I'm fairly confident I won't have the car done by winter, and I'm 100 percent confident I won't find a potential buyer by then, even if I did. Therefore, if I can come up with another way to raise some money over the winter, I may decide to keep my car next summer.
Anyhow, back on task.... my friend owns an '82, with an '86 350 in it that was swapped out of a vette. He's had nothing but trouble with his carb setup, mostly I think because he knows even less about cars mechanics than I do, so he can't tune a carburator. (well, neither can I
)
Would it be possible first off, for him to use the TBI setup off my 6 cylinder '92 RS? If so, what are potential setbacks? Again, I don't know a ton, but it seems to me than v-8 tbi's are rare (or maybe they're just rare on this board), and that must be for a reason. I don't think I've seen a 350 tbi setup. Is that because it's impossible, or maybe it limits hp or something?
Anyways, this is just an idea I was throwing around. My TBI has been very reliable, and the engine runs great. I'd throw the whole setup in his car, but he'd never part with his 350 for a 6 cylinder (can't say I blame him).
What do you guys think?

tbi parts are pretty common. It would eb relativaly straight forward to switch it over to a tbi and ecm if you have the entire setup + electric fuel pump. I dont beleive the tbi came with any of the 6 cyl. camaros. Only carb and mpfi. The tbi's only came witht he v8's and four cyl. But yes, if you get the whole setup off of someone, you could use the tbi induction system easily or you could even put tpi on the engine but that will probably cost you more. As a matter of fact, i think the vette motor had tpi to begin with.
Oh man... There are a lot of options here....
The TBI changeover would be the simplest change. Read up on a lot of threads in the motor swap section as well as in here. There are volumes of information on this site!
Economically, it will still cost money to do any sort of FI change. I am thinking that the engine is from a Corvette but the intake system is changed over to carb.
You might want to look at the Holley website and look into the aftermarket TBI systems they have there. That would be the simplest way to get things going right.
You have the engine. Now all you need is the computer.
Going GM may or may not be the route you want to go.
Hmmm.
Here is a link to a complete TBI system:

That is just one of them. They have others too.
Hope this helps you out a little.
