Oil in the air cleaner

When changing the air cleaner the other day I noticed that there was alot of oil in the air cleaner. Seems like alot of oil has been coming out of the side where the pipe connects to the passenger side valve cover (sorry do not know what that part is called.) What might be the cause of this? The car is not blowing smoke out the tail pipe but smoke can be seen when the air cleaner lid is off and reving the motor.

Usually that is from blowby (gases that leak past the rings and into the crankcase).

You need a new breather filter.

It sounds like your breather filter. It should sit on the inside of the air cleaner base, connected to the hose you were talking about. Try replacing that. You could also ditch the hose and put one directly on the valve cover.

Replacing the PCV valve might also help reduce the volume of blowby going to the breather.

OH NO!!!!! My air filter is completely covered in oil!!! It's a pink color, and smells kinda funny.

Oh wait that's because I have a K&N!!!!! LMAO!!! :sillylol:

Seriously, like brharris27370 said, it's the PCV valve. The reason (well one of them) that you're getting blowby is because the PCV is stuck closed. There is so much pressure being built up in the crankcase that it has no where else to go accept back up past the rings.

And like r90camarors said, it wouldn't hurt to change that filter. Actually make sure there's on there now.

Thanks to all for the reply. I originally had an open air element on when I put the SLP header a couple of months ago. I notice alot of oil was coming out of the air breather I installed with the open air filter so I went back with the original air cleaner. I have change the PCV valve already and it still continues to blow alot of oil. Oil is also starting to come out of the oil cap on th edriver side. I doubt that the slp headers would be the culprit but would like to have this 1 figured out before I take it to the shop. Would the TBI be clogged (where the PCV hose connects to TBI).

You might want to do a compression check and/or a leakdown test to learn the condition of your rings. You didn't overfill the oil, possibly?

One mistake I did when I bought an old, low-mileage car was to dramatically change the driving style that the car had seen, hence the stresses on the motor. I revved it up a lot higher than it have gone before and that caused the top compression rings to hit a ledge that had previously formed in the cylinder bore. Broke them and - voila! - lots of blowby.
