Help with cam choice
Help with cam choice
Okay the time has come to make my 91 RS LO3 5speed come alive. It's got about 52,000 orig granny miles and is in great shape. I've got edelbrock headers, hi flow cat and 3 inch exhaust into 80 series flowmaster. So my motor is capable of breathing adequately. I have sitting in my garage a set of vortec heads and a the GM aluminum vortec TBI intake w/all the egr conversion stuff ready to go on. Now the only thing left is the cam. This car MUST pass emissions and I live in CA so my cam selection is very limited. I've narrowed it down to 3 or 4 grinds, all Crane. I'm sure most of you are probably aware of these since they're pretty much the only legal ones for our cars. The part #'s are Powermax 2020,2030,2031,2032. I'm looking for personal experience with these cams. Anybody have any words of wisdom? Those of you who run these cams could you post your Combo/ET please. Any more info needed let me know.

The 2032 is a bit much for the 305 TBI. The 2031 would probably require a custom chip. The 2030 would bolt right in and would be my recommendation. The 2020 is too small.
I'll second that. I just depends how aggressive you want to go. If it were me I would go with the 2031 with you setup. It will require a chip to run right but you will be able to get by without one for a while.
With the ZZ4 cam you would have to modify those vortec heads to accept the lift. The power band on my car is 2000 - 5600 rpm. I don't have any times, but there is a TPI guy running vortec heads/ZZ4 cam pulling mid 13s. I don’t think the ZZ4 cam is emissions legal, but with the right tuning you should be able to get it to pass. If you can wait until January before you start I have to get my car emissions tested and I could tell you what the sniffer reads.
i woudl suggest a LT4 cam with that combo. with 1.5 rockers the l;ift should be low enough to suit teh stock vortecs and it will provide a nice long poower band once tuned in.
if you don't mind modding the head to accept a little bigger spring and maybe a little port or valve job, then the zz4 woudl be a really bad a$$ cam for that motor.

Don't worry about my vortecs. They're built to accept .525 inches of lift. The cam choice is all I'm worried about. Anyone got specs on the LT4 cam? Is it emissions legal? So is it pretty much agreed upon that the powermax 2020 is too small. Just so you all know reprogramming the computer isn't out of the question, I just haven't really looked into it.
