Man, I tell you what I just switched from a 305 to a 350 in my RS camaro and it has TBI. I was starving the 350 for a while because I had to run it on the stock 305 set up until I could get a new TBI unit and injectors. I still need a chip burned and it should be about complete. It runs good though. I haven't had a chance to take it to a track but I can tell the difference. My 350 came from scoggin dickey chevrolet and it is suppose to have 300hp.( I am assuming that is at the flywheel.)That motor was made specifically for TBI cars and trucks.

You should be able to find a 350 that makes more HP and Tq than that one. If you're doing a REALLY budget minded build up or just need a replacement, than that's the one to go with....but for peformance, you should be able to do better than 249 HP/ 304lb/ft. Actually, I believe RICH92RS got one from Pace I think that puts out 300 HP and 370lb/ft....I think those are the numbers. You could PM him, and he should be able to help you. I have the part numbers to do the exact switch that he did, but not on this computer.

One more thing, do you have to be emissions legal?

I bought the 300hp 350 crate from goautocenter.com.
It's a Caprice 350 short block with tpi heads and a Crane Compucam 2030 hydraulic roller (their recommendation for tbi).
It made 317 hp @4500 and 399 ft/lbs @ 2500 (flywheel)
with SLP 1-5/8" headers, 3" cat, Flowmaster Cat-back, Turbo City throttle body and AFPR and Edelbrock Performer TBI Intake.
Also custom chip from Ed Wright @ Fastchip.com.
It passes smog in CA as a 305 with the stock air cleaner on (for the visual inspection).

RICH92RS350:

That cam you have....is that the one that they supplied, or did you buy that seperately? Also, I thought you had the Holley unit sitting on top of your motor?

It's the cam that came in the motor.
(Optional tbi cam listed towards the bottom of the page)
http://www.goautocenter.com/300hp_tpi_1987-89.htm

I didn't get the Holley Throttle body because at the time, I was getting info that their injectors didn't tolerate increased fuel pressure very well. I understand that is no longer a problem as they don't use that type of injector any more.
If I was to do it again, I'd use the Holley.
The Turbo City unit is nice, but the bottom was not flat and I had a vacuum leak initially. Since the car's my daily driver, I didn't send it back, I just took it off and used a steel block with sandpaper to get it flat and put it back on.
For the money, It should have been flat to begin with.

Don't go with the older technology block. Go with the newer style that has the roller cam. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=128&pid=105

Then you will have a nice base to build off of.

Or go with a nice new L98 shortblock. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=514&pid=620

And go ahead and put some better heads and cam in to begin with. You should still be able to finish the job for around 2k.

Then there is the always popular.

paceparts features the L05 Caprice engine in their new catalog..

"This motor incorporates a factory hydraulic roller cam, a nodular iron crankshaft, hypereutectic pistons, PM connecting rods, torsional damper and cast iron 64cc heads."

This is the engine im going to get when i do my swap in the summer.

Speaking of Hypereutectic pistons: Does anyone know if you can use Nitrous with those pistons?

you ran the engine on the dyno, with the whole exhaust system on?

On the dyno, it had the headers, Y-pipe and cat that are on the car. Ran a regular two-chamber flowmaster muffler and a straight piece of 3" tube, 3' long (not the muffler on the car).
Also had the air pump, water pump and power steering pump hooked up, though the steering pump wasn't connected to anything. Didn't connect dyno's exhaust thermocouples. Mainly ran it in over there to check for leaks, a luxury I no longer have , as my friend doesn't work there any more.

I've been told not to run more than a 50 or 75 shot on the hypereutectic pistons, though I don't personally have much experience with N20. If you plan on running a 150+ shot, I'd definitely invest in some forged pistons.

Thanks, I don't even know if 50 shot is worth the money. It just seems that most people are using 150 shot and knocking off up to 2 sec. on their times. That is pretty impressive. I don't know that much about N2O myself though.

100 shot should be alright on hypers. if the fuel system is up to it and you tune it good.

My year of mustang has hyper pistons from the factory. (92-earlier have forged) and their are a lot of people I know online that run 150 shots and big blowers. One guy ran 11psI ontop of a nice HCI on the stock shortblock and finally broke everything. made over 600hp and ran 11s if I recall.

Im going w/ hypers in the 327 or 350 Im about to start building.

for those trying to buy engines. Ever seen PAW? they have some good deals on entire shortblock/longblock kits.

I agree with the P.A.W. thing. They do have some good buys. They had some good flat top forged pistons at a resonable price when I built a 383 a few years ago.
