305 TBI Times and Mods
305 TBI Times and Mods
I have a 91 RS with a 305 TBI and a 700R4 tranny. I have 2 1/2" flowmaster exhaust and i am wondering what my car would run in the quarter mile and what mods i would need to get into the 14's....im not looking into nitrous either. Thanks.

Probably 16-16.5
1. Do the ultimate TBI mods
2. Change the entire exhaust. Headers, 3" CAT, 3" Cat back
3. Gears. Toss the whimpy 2.73 and go 3.42 posi
4. LT1 Cam and performance intake
5. Vac fuel press regulator and WINALDL for tuning.
6. You may need to change the torque converter to break into the 14's to the 95+ S10 4.3L converter.
1-5 should get you some 14's or trade your car for a 90+ Z28 with 350.

15.4 today virtually stock engine, save for crank pulley and 1.6 ratio rockers.
hoping 14's with the mods brharris listed there hehe
Notes, the polished heads are just that polished with sandpaper to remove casting flash.
The cut-out shows a good 2 tenths gain with runs on/off to verify that.
The dyno was done prior to the 1.6 rocker arms and exhaust cut out. Odds are HP and torque have shot up a good 15 to 20.

I will say....Slade's L03 does exactly what he says it does, I have the upmost confidence that he will be in the 14's if he ends up completing his mods.

I think Slades is more exception than the rule. Also probably some darn good driving to pull 15.4 out of a 190 hp engine. I know my car took nearly 17 secs to make a quarter mile on a bone stock car with the whimpy factory 2.73 auto and it had the 2.5" flowmaster on it when I bought it. I was being a little generous to say you could get 16 secs out of a 2.73 geared automatic with stock TBI 305. 2.5" flowmaster will only have minor effect on the et.

Check my sig. 100% stock innards of the L03. Those times were with a very dirty aircleaner, bald tires, black spark plugs, and 91 octane. I was running very, very rich at the time. And traction was a huge problem which lead to horrible 2.5 and 2.6 sec 60' times. Since then, I have had a custom chip burned-which helped A TON. It made a huge difference, and I'm sure I'm in the 14s now, especially with more experiance launching the car now. I just wish the track was open this time of year.
Oh yeah, I only have the 2 1/2" flowmaster -so don't feel bad. 3" is better, but 2 1/2" isn't sooo bad that you need to replace it right away. Spend that money on something else first like gears or headers.

The headers were fun.
I hit a 16.3 with K&N, My exhaust and 3.42 gears. With headers and coil, I would expect 15.8.

BTW, a higher coil (IE. the msd blaster) does nothing. The stock ignition is sufficient for a slightly modded LO3

Aftermarket intake manifold and airflow enhancer/tbi spacer pairup.
You need to do the Ultimate TBI mods - removing restrictions before expecting gains from mods like exhaust is absolutley necessary.

I have 250k miles on it.....
The coil, After I did the headers, I could not get it to run on all 8 again, so I installed new wires (Needed them anyway.) and put the coil on more for the hell of it. I doubt I even picked up .5 HP, but it does run a little smoother. It was only like, $30. *Shrug*

then i noticed your from miami and that air is humid and all so those times sound right .. sorry
But yea, if you coil was old and then 30 bucks isnt that much for a new one.

When I had my L03 I had Vortec heads, LT4 cam (it was a good deal!), SLP 1 5/8" shorties, 3" exhaust with no cat and a 3" Flowmaster, 3.73 posi rear end, MSD ignition and blaster coil, all the ultimate TBI mods and even tried a 670 TBI with bigger injectors (made no difference), AFR, T5 with ripper shifter and good clutch (don't remember what clutch I actually had), open element air cleaner, 160 stat, and roller rockers (1.5). It ran a best time of 14.5@ 100 or so MPH. I think I could have ran a 13 with that MPH, I don't know for sure.
After the last track even I ripped the motor out because I flattened a cam lobe. The engine was tired anyway and I really didn't feel like putting anymore money in it. I have a 377 now, just haven't put it in the car yet.
You can make power with a 305, but if I were to do it again, I'd just spray it.

What mph are you running? With a cat, catback, open element, coil and free mods the maro went 15.812 @ 83 in the dead of summer at good ol norwalk.

What's wrong with N20???
It is by far the cheapest performance bolt-on in terms of installation time vs net results. When's the last time you replaced an intake, head, and cam and gained 125 Horses?

I pulled 10.3 in the 1/8 with a ****y 2.3 60ft. That was my first time ever at the trak so I know if a skilled driver drove my car it would have been good for a 9.8 or so. The mods in my sig were all that I had.
