question about open element?

hi, i have a 91 rs, and i want to put a open element breather on it. but i was wondering if it would be better to put a dual snorkel, or a custom ram air?. which do you think will give me a better gain.? let me know what you guys think. thanks

14x3 open element, easiest, cheapest, most air.

I went with an open element (14x3") first.
Since then I've tried dual snorkel cold air and single snorkel with tpi cold air setups and both were noticeably restrictive compared to the open element.
I always end up going back to a simple open element.

IMO I plan on going with a cowl hood and a ram air box from www.ramairbox.com. Depending on how big a hood you have you can get bigger elements with it. Hopefully that way I will always have non engine compartment air going to my TBI and plenty of it.

I'm debating this open element thing vs. a dual snorkel. I don't think I have to worry about emissions here in the UK but still I will most likely ship it back to the US when my tour over here is over. I was wondering how "emissions friendly" this mod is if at all. This is further down the road but I am wanting to do my research now into all options.

Just keep your stock air cleaner assembly and install it when you need to be inspected in the future. Through it in the trunk when you have it shipped back.
Thank you for serving the USA !!!

Yeah, hang onto it.
Depends what state you end up in when you come back.
Here in CA, the open element will not pass the visual inspection, but it only takes a few minutes to put the stock unit on and then to remove it after the inspection.

Here's what I did:

all stock except, k&N filter and replaced the filter cover with a peice of custom round metal that is the same diamiter at the fiter, so I have the cold air from the snorkel and the open air filter.

I kind of feel a differnace, What do you think.

just buy a k&n cleaning kit from your local parts store, they aren't that much $, and you can clean the filter, it will most likely flow better than the paper unit

Ok, so what all do I need to get this open element? I finally got my Summit catalog in the mail. And what all do I need to do? Thanks. I think I will go with open element since it can be swapped easily (for emissions reasons) and will clean up some of the clutter in the engine area.

I'm using the Moroso Flatbottom Racing air Cleaner (#65911).
It's chrome, clears the hood with the Edelbrock Performer tbi intake (which is 1/4" taller than the stock manifold) and eliminates the stock air cleaner's restrictive spacer.

Later I installed a K&N 14x3" Element.
You can punch a hole in the bottom for the air temp sensor, or just relocate it to a nice cool spot somewhere else.

I take it the K&N air cleaner will fit with the stock hood. I live in the UK for right now and it gets hella cold over here. Do I have to worry about icing as someone said in other threads about open air?

It has got down to 0 deg F here this year. I have not had any problems.

Ok. Open air element is sounds really good. It's clean, seems simple and is reversable for emissions reasons so I have definitely decided to do it. I am thinking about the K&N 14x3 at Summit.

Now I am eventually going to get an Edlebrock or Holley manifold. Will the K&N that I am thinking of cause me any problems? I am asking because of what I read in the thread about someone having trouble installing thier Holley manifold.

Just a question I am asking. Once again, forgive the newbie.

Oops, sorry RICH, I forgot about your post. I am keeping your suggestion in mind. I like K&N though because I have dealt with thier products before.
