305 TBI upgrades
305 TBI upgrades
My friend just bought an '88 Formula with a 305, 700r4, and a TBI, what are some easy and relatively inexpensive upgrades such as computer chips, intake manifold, that would help the power. I'm looking for things that won't take more than a day or so to install.
THanks for the help.

start with full exhaust, headers and catback, then do gears and a posi. most chips arent worth the money. also go to a dual snorkal or open element air cleaner, that will make a difference, as well as opening up the hood schoop

Do a search for Ultimate TBI mods on here too. That should take about a day. I also installed underdrive pulleys from March. They advertise 11 hp gain at the rear wheels for under $100, but they slow your alternator down a little. No problems though for the past 3 years.

ive also got a 305 tbi with an open element you should get that it helps alot besure to put a vaccum plug over the vaccum fitting.
start with ultimate tbi mods parts 1&2, open element air cleaner, adn diy afpr. all from teh tech articles. pulleys don't make much of a difference and off teh shelf chips are a waste of money, spend an hour making the diy afpr and adjsut your base timing will get you more than teh $130 chip.
anothe rgood place to make up a lot of performance is the rear gears. most stock auto's have 2.72 one leggers. get a V6 rear from teh salvage yard, swap in a posi carrier in place fo teh differential and you have an instant 3.42 posi rear that will really pick up the performance of teh car.
exhasut is also a nice place to make a gain, teh stock y-pipe is a complete joke. if you are on a budget teh flowmaster american thunder and hooker cat backs ae both reasonably priced and soudn pretty good. then go to your local exhaust shop and have them make you a nice y-pipe and replace teh stock cat with a 3inch unit. a good Y and 3 inch mandrel bent tubing is worth a lot fo power and a great exhaust note.
these things are a great place to get started. there are intakes and other parts available that will help a lot too, but these are the things to take care of first.
