96-98 would be the years to look for a Vortec motor and yes it would be a good replacement for your 305. Just make sure and get some 350 TBI injectors and knock sensor to use with the setup. Oh and a Vortec intake. For a $1000 you should be able to get the engine and all parts needed to put it in if you shop well and get the engine locally. You can gain some more horse power if you get a used $50 LT1 Z28 cam to go in there while you have the engine out.
Yea its a great engine if it comes from a 96+ truck or SUV just make sure it has low miles and you might want to put a more healthy cam in it like an LT4. Oh yea dont forget the different intake for the vortec heads.

you still need a new intake manifold the one the truck motor has won't work at all. get the GMPP one (http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...d=738&pid=8154)
or a carb intake for vortec heads and an adaptor plate

yeah, i know i just realized that, when i was looking for the vortech engine i cam across a caprice long block at reasonable price.....will this work with the rs setup...i havent decided yet i may convert to tpi

If you are on a budget this is a very good intake for the $$

The vortec Truck engines are notoriously loose in the bottom end, part of the reason why there are so many vortec heads out there to swap...
may be an idea to steer clear of junk yard vortec truck motors, unless you are going to do a good rebuild to it.

If you convert to a 350 and go with TPI u will be back to square one cuase TPI is so restrictive for the 350. [/QUOTE]
emm...thats strange, most of the guys that i know run 350 tpi or have done the conversion to the tpi and love em...they produce more torque than the tbi and get better gas mileage. but then again thats what they know and like....i myself have always love the old school look of the open element and may choose to stay that way just because..
i had forgotten about some of the problems with the vortech engines and at the salvage yard they are over priced, i found a caprice 5.7 w/ roller cam for have the price....
