when i went from 2.73 to 3.73s the speed was WAY off, around 20MPH on the highway, go to http://www.700r4.com/sitemap.html click "useful tools" and then "speedometer calculator". It will tell you what speedo gears you will need, but they are a pain in the @$$ to change. To install the drive gear youll need to unbolt the lower shock mounts, remove the rear springs, and remove the torque arm and tailshaft housing. You might just want to find out how far the speedo is actually off and just get use to it.
5 mph isnt bad, to hell with the hassle of swapping the speedo gear....id just leave it especially since you have the gps, ...and thats good that your car says you are going faster than you actually are....mine does that and keeps my *** out of trouble....

speedo gears are very simple to change. find out which gears you need, and get them. read the tech article on this site a couple times and print it out. get under the car and do it, you will be so much happier with the accurate speedo (especially since they are so easy to change!)
if you wanna take teh budget root you can jsut go to the salvage yard and look for an 89 and up V6 car with 3.42 gears and an auto. that car woudl have the speedo gears you need for your electronic gauge cluster.

Find out what gears you need you might not have to change the "ring" gear which is the one that you have to pull the tail shaft to get to. More than likely you can get away with just a pinion change, 5 minute job. Whatch, GM will dik ya the ring gear si 4 dollars and the pinion is 20ish. go figure.

I've always referred it as the DRIVE and DRIVEN gear, but I guess when you say "ring" and "pinion" people will not assume you are talking about the rear end.
If you have an auto trans, you can swap both gears in less than 30 minutes. There is/was a tech article on this. If you have a manual trans, you will have to remove the trans to get to the drive gear.
You can get both gears from GM for about $10
