Check your getting sparking at all cylinders & check plugs.
Check fuel filter and fuel pressure.
Sounds like a fuel problem, maybe even your ecm playing up.

I am a novice too so I only know how to check for sparks.
When the car is playing up, pull out a spark plug, attach the lead and lay the plug on the engine to ground it, then get someone to turn the ignition key while you watch for sparks. This will show how the plugs are sparking.
To check you getting a spark at all pull off the main HT lead in the centre of the distributor cap and hold it close to a metal surface, again while someone cranks it over and see if your getting sparks.
I dont know how to check fuel pressure sorry!

took the air cleaner off... didnt see any fuel shooting out, but i dont really know where to look, so I just kinda watched and didnt see anything.
Look in the two holes at the top of the engine when you have the air cleaner lid off while your friend is turning the ignition key.
If its working fine, fuel should be spraying onto each of the butterfly valves, get your friend to tap the gas pedal a few times so you can see the valves moving if your not sure where they are.
The injectors are the big lumps suspended right above these valves, two wires enter each one.
Look into the throttle body while the engine is running, its quite interesting!!! just dont drop anything down there!!!
