Cam question for the experts.

Cam question for the experts.

I call CompCams yesterday, and talked to them about cam recomendations for my upcoming changes

305 TBI
Ported 416 Heads
Weiand Streetram 7525 (Thanks DanW )
454 TB
Headers (shorty 1 5/8" w/ AIR)
3" catback
5speed
3.08 gears (when i talked to the guy we also talked about a cam as though i had 3.42s because after i do this, gears and posi are next)

anyway, here is the cam they recomended, i want to here what the experts think. this was alot more cam then i was expecting. i even double checked to make sure he knew i had a 305 LOL. do you think for a street car i might be better off going with a smaller grind (although i plugged this into desktop Dyno, and it made a SWEET torque curve from 2k-6k )

GRIND # CS XR264HR-12
DESCRIPTION HYD ROLLER CAM
INT EXH
VALVE ADJUSTMENT HYD HYD0
GROSS VALVE LIFT .488 .495
DURATION AT .006 TAPPET LIFT 264 269
VALVE TIMING AT .006 OPEN CLOSE
INT 24 60
EXH 70 18

THESE SPECS ARE FOR CAM INSTALLED AT 108 INT C/L

INT EXH
DUR AT .050 212 218
LOBE LIFT .3250 .3300
LOBE SEPARATION 112.0
ADVANCE 4
INT MASTER ID 3312S
EXH MASTER ID 3313S

EDIT:

another communication with comp, and clarifing that this was a TBI car i guess that first recomendation was assuming i had a carb.... this is the cam they gave me on try #2, i call because that cam seemed awful big to me.

That's a good cam for a mild 305. should work well with the stuff you have planned for it.

Just a matter of getting the tbi, and the computer control to play along with it.

I think that cam will be good for ya... after you become the expert tuner you might want to take a couple steps up to the low 220's @ .050 area.

How much are you going to have in those heads to get them on the motor?

so you think the larger of the 2 is a good choice? or the smaller, i have talked with comp a couple more times, they think that with some computer work , the larger of the two (264) would be a better choice.

they don't really need anything, i am going to put new springs on and seals, and port them and that should be it. brandon said the rockers, valves, and seats looked great.

so i am not going to bother with the rockers or guids or any of that right now, goona put new valve seals in, and a new set of springs, and run them.

i am in the process of getting everything together right now :-D

i am also going to talk with a couple of guys local here that do prom burning, and see if i can't talk one of them into coming over and helping me get started burning a chip so i can see some of the process.

the 454 TB, should be here fairly soon, it is getting taken off the truck today.

BTW, anyone know if tall perimeter valve covers will work with a serpentine belt system? looking a the alternator possision, i am not sure tall covers will clear?

One thing Dewey.. those cam's are getting a fair amount of lift. I'm not sure what stock rockers will handle.. you may have to spring for a set of long slots. Also we better pull a spring soon and check retainer to guide clearance.

If you've got someone to help ya tune and you feel confident they will be there through for ya and not abandon you in the middle... go ahead with the bigger one but it will really test your learning ability if you have to go it alone... kind of like jumping into a higher level class w/o any background or the 101 class. On the same note, you might want to add only one part at a time to ease the tuning process. That one has bit me more than once... trying to trouble shoot when I made 3 of 4 modifications at the same time.

The key is to balance the best cam for performance while keeping enough vacuum at idle / part throttle for tuning resolution. Since you are cam limited in this area cylinder head flow is critical to getting enough air into the cylinder... so take your time with your head porting. If you don't already have it, David Vizards book How to Build and Modify Cevrolet Small Block V8 Cylinder heads has tons of great info and walks you through the process. ISBN 0-87938-547-2
