17.1 ?????
17.1 ?????
took my 91 rs 5spd to the track 2 days agoe and its best time was a 17.1... should it be faster? it was my first time ever at a track. i think i got a good start.
is this usual for a car with 109k on it?
can i drive?
all i have done to it is plugs cap wires and an open element paper filter.
i did beat a little riced out VW with that run though.

well in order for an accurate answer we'll need to know what kind of engine you have. if it's a 3.1 then it sounds about right.

Post all the numbers from your time slip. 60' 330' 1/8 mile etc.
What elevation is the track you ran at?
I'd say a stock 305 TBI 5 speed in good tune should run ~16.0-16.5 @ 83-86 mph.
First things are check the wires for correct order and connections, then timing.
Does the car seem to "pull" up to 4500-5000 rpm?

That's about right if it's totally stock. I ran mine the first month I bought my car with 164K miles on it. That was the quickest time I pulled.
Now I have 186K on the ticker. I have a Jet Stage II chip (used $50), 180* T-stat, 185* fan switch, dual snorkel intake, K&N truck filter #1500 with a chrome truck air cleaner lid, Catco cat, Dynomax cat back (2-1/2"), B&M TransPak, and a PowerTrax locking diff.
I went to the strip 2 weekends ago and ran a 16.539 et @ 81.69 MPH. 100% traction. I wanted to adjust the timing, lock up the TC, and change back to the stock chip, to see what gains I could make, but they had bracket racing that day and all I got in was 2 runs in.
Overall I was pleased though. I know it's not a super quick time, but considering how many miles I have on the engine, and I haven't touched the engine at all (not even the TB), I was surprised to shave off over .5 second.
The most I spent money on was the PowerTrax for $340. Total of everything was $840. Soon I'm going to get Spohn's LCAs, Panhard rod, poly trans and torque arm mount, SFCs and changing to a 3.42 rear end.
Once I get those things done I should shave off another 1/2 second (I hope).
I've been building a 350 for the car. It's not too far from being done. I'm trying to get everything in the CAR ready first before I drop it in. Later on I'll get the Spohn torque arm, poly motor mounts, front poly bushings, 2800 stall TC, etc., while I have the engine out. It'll be easier that way.

work on that launch. If you can get that 60' down to a 2.4 (which is totally reasonable) you'll be doing much better. How do you launch the car exactly? What do you rev it to? How much clutch?

hey guys finally got to get my bomb to the track.
my car had 145k on it when i ran it. the only mods that i had is a gutted cat and a k/n filter it a lo3 tbi auto car 88 SC
i made 4 passes on it track temps were in the 50's and it was just at dark.
pass 1 left lane pass 2 right lane
reaction 1.288 ---- 1.013
60ft 3.209 ---- 2.436
1/8 11.73 ---- 10.764
mph 65.417 ---- 66.007
spun like crazy ------- spun some not bad tho.
but still beat a honda
pass 3 right lane pass 4 right lane
reaction .840 ---- 1.078
60ft 2.328 ---- 2.460
1/8 10.61 ---- 10.81
mph 66.323 ---- 65.877
doing better with da tree -------- sleepin on da tree again
on the 3rd pass i tried to sling shot it be holding it @ 1k rpm and then go it worked
car was not quite as consistant as i thought it would be but the track condtion was bad the right lane was the best. and i had to roast the street tires like crazy

Did you plug that vacuum line when you put the open element on there? Also bumping your timging to 6-8* will help some. Maybe lowering your fuel pressure would help some, but that requires some modifications. Where do you live?
