causes of ping

Just wondering how I can eliminate ping. I run 92 octaine fuel. plugs gapped at .45(using msd6a). timing set to 8 degrees advance per edelbrock. would running a colder plug help this out? and maybe opening the gap to .50. it only happens if i'm at cruising speed and then I floor it. I will get a split second pinging.

Sounds like you need a little tweaking of your AE (aka pump shot) tables. Might be going a bit lean, causing the audible ping. Do you have the facilities to burn your own chips?

I don't have the stuff to burn proms.. the weird this is that the chip I'm using is a custom from edelbrock designed to work with those heads, cam, inktake combo and they say in the specs to run 8 degrees advance for emsission purposes.. maybe I can try at 6 or 7 degrees and see if it makes a difference..

That's what I was thinking.

Are you using platinum tipped plugs?

no I'm using just plain ol ac delcos..
I was thinking of switching to champion rc12yc as that's what edlbrock had suggested with the instructions that came along with the heads..

I set the timing to 6 degrees instead of 8 tonight and tried it out.. still does it .. seem to run a little better though. from a dead stop I can lay into it and it will never do it.. it's only if I'm cruising along and I decide to lay into it.. I don't even have to floor it and it will do it.. just a quick pinging/crackling sound and then it goes away.
