I finally did it.(fuel pressure guage and afpr)

I finally got around to installing me fuel pressure regulator yesterday. Well I didn't expect to find that I was only running 8psi. That might explain why my car would seem to lose power or excellerate slowly above 75 to 80 when I put my foot in it. It would drop down into third and just fell like it was running out of gas. Today I installed my diy afpr and just about had to compress the spring completely to get it to produce 11 to 11.5psi. This did help some and now it pulls all the way to 5800rpm in 2nd gear. Everthing is stock except for the ultiment tbi mod and cut the small end of the snorkel off the air cleaner then hooked the hose back up to the scoop next to the radiator support. I may be looking at a new fuel pump next.

just remember that those fuel pressure gauges (liquid filled) are very inaccurate when they heat up. My gauge shows 1-3 PSI when i have been driving my car around for awhile.

These readings were with a cold car.

Are you sure that with just increased fuel pressure it pulls to 5800 rpm? That seems quite high on a stock engine.

My car does that occasionally.

The other night, my wife and I went out on a country road to fry some hides. I put it in 1st, held the brake untill the rears let go, then rode it out ~4000 RPMs. The tires eventually grabbed, then the next thing I know, the car's running like a raped ape.

I didn't even get a chance to shift into 2nd before I looked down and saw the tach needle kissing 6000 RPMs.

I said "DAMN!! What the heck?!?!? I guess she ate her Wheaties this morning!!" :sillylol:

Yet other times it falls on it's face ~5000 RPMs.

Maybe I need to check and adjust my FP like Steve did. I just wish we had a Shrader valve.

Hmm, thats seems weird. I dunno why it would pull to 6,000 sometimes and only 5,000 others. That is a lot of difference. My stock 305 tbi doesnt like to pull much past 4500, and anything after 5,000 is useless. I find it hard to believe that by just increasing the fuel pressure it would enable him to pull almost 1,000 more rpms into the power band. Oh well, weirder things have happened before.

I did the ultiment tbi mod, added a stock injector pod spacer along with moding the stock air cleaner and now the afpr, everything else is totally stock. The first time I ran it in the 1/8mi after the ult tbi mod I ran a 10.56, before that I could only manage a 11 flat.

I understand some days a car might run a little better or a little worse than others, but for it to pull a full 1,000 rpm's more out of the blue is a lot! I believe it, but a thousand rpm's is a lot man, a whole lot!

i had a 79 camaro bone stock wait it had headers . it pulled one time till i barried the tach at 7000 1rst gear till 60 mph. the kicker was when i finnaly changed the motor i pulled it apart to see what this tap it had made since i bought it was, and i found that the crank had gouges in it from the rod studs from when someone had tried rebuilding it. so as you can see that that motor should hve blown up around 5000. it unexplainable but weird stuff happens ever now and then
