383 update/ fuel pump problems

Well, it had been a while since I ran the winaldl mainly because I kept getting knock counts when I shouldn't have. I figured this was do to an over torqued sensor or wrong sensor all together. What I did know was my baseline run at 98.4mph in the quarter was pretty disappointing. Since then, I have added the exhaust dump, which was a huge improvement. Considering I only have single 2 1/2" tubing, exhaust was an issue, but the cut out has helped tremendously. My guess is that I'm more in the 101mph time frame.
Then, I used a dummy knock sensor to rid my problem of false knock. Another SOTP gain that probably pushed me to 102mph trap speed.
So thinking that I had my two biggest problems staightened out, I ran winaldl tonight, only to find my blms bouncing all over the place. 128 in one frame and 141 in the next over.... So, I finally rigged my fp gauge so that I could actually see it under load and driving, as it was at a steady 15psi when in neutral. Well, needless to say, the fp drops to 9 psi any time I give it past a 25% throttle!
A Walbro 255 will be going in very shortly, which will hopefully take care of my fuel shortage. The fuel shortage could be the reason I was getting so much knock at higher rpms as well. Hopefully, that will be cured as well. I could definetely use more timing at lower rpms, and will be getting a new chip burned once I get the pump in and get some solid data.
By the time that is said and done, I'm hoping for 105mph trap, which is pretty realistic imo. It may be even better, it just depends on how well she can breath once I get these issues straightened out.
Then, after I get the chassis and suspension hooked up, I will be swapping to the 900cfm TBI, well that is if I can find one cheaper than the $800 O'Reiley's quoted me at. I could have swore they were more in the $450 price range. I will hopefully make it out to the track a week from wednessday, so I will keep every body posted.

Sounds like the project is turning out good for ya man. I'm interested to see how you do at the track when everything's straightened out. You're our 383 TBI pioneer, does it really run pretty smooth with that chip from tbichips.com, it looks like you would need a Lot of tuning with that cam?

Well, I am really impressed with tbichips.com. Brian did a great job on the chip simply using engine specs and no actual data. He is also very communative and helpful. With, little or no load on the engine, the blms are at 128 for the most part. I'll have to wait and see how they look under load once I get the Walbro pump installed. Unfortuantly the stock pump just can't come close to handling the fuel flow and pressure I need, so my blms under load are around 140 because of tthe fp drop. I can't wait to take her to the track once I get my pump changed out!
The cam is pretty choppy at idle-it sounds bad a$$ with the exhaust cutout. I went with the cam because of the 114 LSA, which makes computer tuning a little friendlier. The only problem with it so far is the weak vacuum at lower rpms, which makes for some rough braking.
Unfortuantly, if fix one thing, and something else brakes, it seems like a never ending problem. One of these days, it'll all come together......

I saw these on Ebay.I cant see why you would have to pay $850 unless you wont settle on anything less than brand new.

Well, those are excellent prices.....but I definetely want to go with the 900cfm version equiped with the newer style injectors and pod. I want to stay away from the old style injectors do to the reliability issues common with them.

From what I have read you should stay away from the Holley TBI's that have the injectors with the black caps like in the links above, those have the crappy holley injectors that had a lot of problems, they have since swiched to a GM type Delphi injector that is much better, that's what they use on the Commander 950 systems, it doesn't have the black cap.

yeah, I definetely don't want to go with the holley unless it is a newer style delphi injectors. The delphi injectors are not only smaller(making for less airflow restriction) but handle higher psi better, and well, are better all around. I have 'em in my 670 and haven't had a problem yet. But unfortuantly, I've did more searching, and the cheapest I can find one for is $800, which is making me seriously consider multi port injection.
Either way, unless I come across one of the newer 4bbl tbi's for cheap, I'm just gonna stick it out with my 670 for a while. I'm just dumping too much money into this d@** car. Almost $400 in front suspention and the $125 Walbro 255 pump this week alone!!! Oh well. At least I'm getting 25-26mpg/highway..... no worries, my blms are at 128 when cruising
