labor for a full gear swap would probably be pretty high
easy way to do it, is to go with 3.42s (a nice gear combo for our cars)
alot of V6 cars came with 3.42 open drum brake rears, get the WHOLE rear from a v6 car (should be like $100 at a scrap yard) just make sure the wear pattern on the gears is good.
then install the new carrier on those, since you aren't swapping gears you don't have to worry about getting the pinion depth set correctly. all you have to do is set back lash and check the wear pattern, which if you are somewhat mechanicly inclinded, should be easy enough for you to do with a dial-indicator.

I finished my gear install two days ago. I was planning on going with the v6 rear end, but i couldn't find one easily, so i just decided to rebuild the one in my car. The slp posi unit was 100, the richmond gears were about 200, a complete install kit was 130 (i dont remember exactly on this). My dad and i droped the rear end out of the car in about 2 hours, took it to one of our friends that owns a shop and has all those expensive tools, and installed it back in the car the next day. The guy charged 150, but he completley tore it apart, and rebuilt it with the parts we gave him, and put it all back together so all we had to do was put it back in the car.
grand total: about $600 when it was all done
in the end, it was well worth it!!

yeah it worked out great for you, but not everyone has friends with shops that are equiped for it.
Man, what are you waiting on! Go for it. You should be able to tell the gear ratio by turning the pinion yoke and counting how many revolutions it takes to make the axle rotate one time.

i went with 3.73s and SLP posi and it is the best mod i have done so far. 3.42s might be better for a stock engine, but im planning on going with a L05 350 and LT1 cam in the future, so i figured 3.73s would be better for that setup. The gears and posi knocked a good 4-5 tenths off my ET. Went from a best of 15.970 to 15.294 with the gears, posi, crank pulley, 6* base timing advance and tbichips Stage 1 chip.

I went with an SLP posi and 3.23 take outs from a LS1 car with about 1,000 miles on them. I also got the complete ratech rebuild kit.
$100 posi
$110 Ratech
$50 gears
$15 lube and posi additive
$225 labor for complete rebuild
TOTAL = $500
I must say WOW!! I went with the 3.23's because I drive on the interstate alot, and gas milage is somewhat of a concern with me. I definately recommend this mod.
Now if I can just get some speedo gears to correct my speedometer.

3.73s
You idealy want to cross the traps at or just past your peak power in third gear (1:1). on a stock engine, which only taps from 85-90 mph 4.10 gears would even be better than 3.73's or 3.42's for this. You also have to consider gas mileage and every day driveability as well and I think 3.73s are the best all around gear for this.

I guess I'm just easily impressed.
Anyways guys, do I need both the drive and driven gear, or just one? And if so, which one?
Thanks guys.

Actually, I've got another question.
I went to 700r4.com and used their little speedo calculator to find out which gears I need (Drive = 17 tooth / Driven = 43 tooth).
So I thought I was in luck, because they have a nice little kit that gives you both gears and the housing for like $60. But, it turns out that it was only for cable operated, and it's my understanding that the 90' and ups are electrical operated.
So now what? I can't seem to find a place that carries what I'm looking for. Surely some of yall who changed out your gears, had the newer of the 3rd gens. What did yall do, and where did you go?
Help me out yall.

I went to the dealership today, and they guy at the parts counter was a complete moron. He told me that I don't have speedo gears and that everything is run by the computer.
Anyways, I think I just got the moron of the shop, since most guys I know who work at the dealerships aren't that dumb. So it doesn't make a difference if it's electrical or not, the gears are the same for either one? So what the hell is different?

SLP overprices their speedo gears, just do some searching on the boards and you can find part numbers you need, then just go down to the dealership.

im with gunny on this i guess i get impressed easily...... after swapping out the rear it seems like overdrive is actually a gear..because with the 2.73 rear ovdrv was a real dog no acceleration at all now i can lay into it a lil and she actually scoots decently without hitting passing gear ....kinda nice

the diffrence between the electric and cable speedos is this.
the gears turn based on the speed of the tail shaft, on the cable cars, the gears turn a cable that goes to the speedo, and in turn it turns the internals of the speedo to read the speed. the electical speedo, the gears turn an electrical pick-up, the sender unit transmits those electrical pulses to teh ECU, and the ECU copies those pulses to the speedo (to bad you can change this in the ecu
) so they both work the same way, the only diffrence is the method of transmitting the rovolutions of the tail shaft. but if the gears for the tailshaft output are wrong, both electrical and cable speedos will read wrong.

Well, I went to another GM dealership today, and since I didn't know the exact colors of what is in there now, and what will be going in there, he couldn't help me.
So I told him that I used the formula off of 700R4.com and it said I needed a 17 teeth and 43 teeth; and then said it would be better if I could go out on the interstate and have somebody gun me at 60 mph and that way I could find out how much I'm off.
(Like all my friends have radar guns or something, I guess they did back in the 60's) He said he doesn't know all about formulas and such, he's just old school.
That's it.
The next time I go to the dealership, and if I have to deal with one more moron, I'm going to start using some hand to hand combat on them, and choke them out.

2.) Don't ever refer to me as a "mother****** Devil Dog" until you've earned the title yourself.
3.) It's not basic, that's the Army. You're going to Boot Camp. Not even close to being the same thing. You'll understand the difference if you make it.
So are you going to the island or San Diego? Either way it will be fun.
