functional RAM AIR hood?
is anyone using a ram air hood that is functional on a TBI? i have the WS6 hood on the way and i was wondering if there is anything that anyone has done to make this work. i see them on TPI cars all the time but not on a TPI yet
I must have asked this question in three different threads. So far no one out there has a functional ram air with a TBI. I just got mine in the other day. I'm gonna go with an open element. It's your best bang for the buck. If you wanna spend a couple hundred dollars, you could get one fabbed up but it would have to be all custom and I don't really think you'd like to go through with that. Besides, if you do make a custom intake, your engine won't be able to handle that much air coming through unless you have some serious mods done to it. Best bet is go with an open element. With the extra clearance, you can also go a little higher than the stock replacement. I'm going to see if I can fit in a 4" in there. I'll let you know how it works. It should be ready by next week.

you can easily make a ws6 hood functional:
1. remove the sound deadener from the underside of the hood.
2. remove the block off plate from the cowl opening. leave the screen in place.
3. take a sheet of flat aluminum. cut to fit the framing on the underside of the hood. the idea is to seal the cowl area off.
4. cut a round hole in the aluminum plate just big enough for the air cleaner element to fit through.
5. get a taller air cleaner element. you want to extend the element up through the hole in the aluminum plate, but not hit the underside of the hood. the height will vary depending on the intake/adapter/spacer combination you run.
6. get an air cleaner lid just big enough to cover the element. k&n has new air cleaner tops that are actually filter elements and breathe! should be the best way to go.
7. get a gasket made to seal the back of your hood to the firewall. it's the perfect size to seal the aircleaner housing against the aluminum plate you made.
voila! HEAVY breathing cowl induction!
if you want to go even cooler, make the flap functional. there's a place that makes kits to make the flap functional on 2nd gen shaker hoods. 80-82 z-28s had functional flaps, too. opened and closed with the throttle.

i have an actual 83 trans am functional cowl setup on my formula. it doesn't breathe well at all, there's only around a 6" slot in the ir cleaner top for the cowl air to enter. this will flow A LOT more air.
i'd do it to mine, but i'm in the process of seeing if i can get a 2nd gen trans am shaker to fit. how cool would that be? i just bought one off ebay and am waiting for it to be delivered.

if they make the hood, i'm sure they make the kit to make it functional

the only kit i have found so far is to make the TPI functional becaust the throttle body is right there in the front of the engine
