redline and wont go above 80mph??

this after noon I ran aginst a mustang. its the first time Ive raced the car since I got it, and I knew Id loose, but not the way it happened.
we went from a rolling start at about 55mph and we both just floored it. I was about 1 car length behind him when we started and that was how it stayed untill we hit 80mph.
for me that was where it ended. my car redlined, hit 80mph and went no further.
what is wrong with my car? I knew id get beat, but I expected to last past 80mph. I was under the impression the governer was set at 115mph.
could it have some thing to do me having the gas floored.
at this point my best guess is the car didnt down shift for some reason.(tv cabel maybe adjusted wrong??)
and yes my car runs fine only prob's I know of is my egr doesnt work quite right all the time, and my valve seals are a little worn.
can any of ya give me an idea what could be wrong?

dont you just love not having a 2-3 shift under WOT? Thats a common problem with the stock 700-R4. The throttle valve gets dirty and the trans wont shift into third under WOT. Nothing more then a minor annoyance. Mine does it as well.

Ive heard that you can get your transmission flushed and it will keep the throttle valve from sticking. try manually shifting, i dont know if it will help or not but it might.
