Is this BS

Lately I havent got much done to my car since I opened my own landscaping bussiness, I havent had time to do much and I really dont have time to sit down and put a gear in my car seeing as how I have never done it before and I would have to use a manual that would take forever. So I call a guy at a speedshop by my house and I asked him what he would charge, He said $1000 with the gear. How in the hell is that possible the gears cost like $200 max.So he tells me that my 89 camaro has a rearend made in Australia and bla bla bal . I was pissed ,I was just wondering if this is true and if not how much it should cost with the purchase of the 3.73 ring gear and pinion. I was thinking $500 .

Depends. Your Camaro might have the coporate axle or the Australian built one. Depending on what engine you might have. Let us know what you have.

if you have the australian (9 bolt rear), you're probably talking 3-400 just for the gears. another 75 or so for the installation kit.

setting up a ring and pinion is very meticulous work. i think you could easily look to spend 2-300 labor to have that done.

a posi unit for that rearend new would go for 350-400 at least.

so, depending on what the speed shop is going to do, 1,000 might not be an unreasonable price.

I would look into a whole used rear end unit and swap the whole rear. I've seen 3.73 rears from private owners for as little as $150. I wanted a 3.42 posi rear, and a used parts yard quoted me $175 with a 6 month warranty - however they didn't have one at the moment and I settled for a 3.08 posi rear for $125 with warranty. Took me a weekend (alone) to swap it in.

If your car origionally had the L03, I would think it is a 10 bolt. But I don't know for sure, but I don't see too many people running 9 bolts on the tbi forum, which leads me to assume l03s came with a 10 bolt. Your best bet is to check. 10 perimeter bolts obviously means you have a 10 bolt, in which case you would be looking at around $250 labor

I'm pretty sure he has a 10 bolt. The only problem is it's an '89 which means it could have 26 or 28 spline axels, which will effect which differential he needs. I think you can tell by the VIN, i.e., VINs after xxxxxxxxx have 28 spline, but I'm not sure what the VIN number is. If he has 28 spline axels, he could use the SLP take-off posi if they still sell it. It was $99, and works great, and manages to take the abuse my 383 throws at it (knock on wood).

All TBI IROC's came factory with the coporate 7.625" rear end; which is a definite plus since the Borg Warner rear's parts are so expensive (eg. ring and pinion).

I switched my 10 bolt for the 9 bolt in 5 hours minus beer drinking time. It was well worth it.
