How nuts am I?

I installed my 350 back in april. When I set the timing, I set it way advanced.

87 Octane
Stock heads and compression
LT4 cam
15* of initial timing.

I backed it down to 8*. Nastier sound, less power.

To much timing thats for sure. You should be at 8* tops. Especially with 87 octane. I wouldn't run 8* unless I was running 93 octane personally.

I put a jumper wire between the 1 and 2 ALDL connector (top right most contacts.) The check engine light will start flashing, and I set the timing like normal.

8* is about right.

When I ran that 13.8 at 102 it was with 93 octane and ~14 degrees advance. That was with the ANLU eprom. It SUCKS as far as timing is concerned. Just like the 5.0 mustang guys.....they advance the timing a lot and never look back. I since then put the total timing back down but added a LOT of timing just off idle. That was the biggest improvement.

I may be wrong but I don't believe shorting those two pins will put the timing in backup mode. If not it would explain why the 15* ran better.

May want to disconnect the EST connector and double check your setting. I would also be interested in your results if you try the EST connector vs. the A/B pins shorted.

RBob.

IIRC, thats how the manual told me to do it. I'll probably check it with the connector disconnected and see what happens.

Well, I disconnected it and the timing was different. It was 3*. I advanced it to 8* and the car feels 100% better.

It's not a hard process but, to explain it here would take up alot of space and I don't want to crowd this page.

I will be happy to explain it to you.

That goes for all rookies. Just call me professor Howdoyudothat.
