91 Camaro RS Problem
91 Camaro RS Problem
Today I went and looked at a 91 Camaro RS with a 305. Road like a dream and shifted well no hesitation at all. Body wasnt rusted out neither were the frame and the frame supports. Only thing i noticed was that the temp guage was at 250 which is really high. The fan was spinning as fast as it could. The car has 140,000miles while the motor has 80,000. Only thing i can think of is that since its the original radiator it might be clogged or the oil cooler lines. New waterpump at thermostat. Any ideas?
could be a number of things...
first, i would check for a collapsed hose...then a new thermostat....then new cooling lines...then new water pump...then a new radiator...
of course this is in the order of the cheapest to replace, but going about it in this manner makes sure that you do not spend money on larger(more expensive) items you don't have to and also makes sure that the weaker links are taken care of if the problem turns out to be something larger...like the radiator...hope it helps.

I was having a heating issue on my 89 Camaro and found that the air deflector that is located under the front of the car was gone. It hangs down and scraps the ground in high and low places in the road. It must have gotten torn off. I replaced it and it helped 100%. I have noticed the angle of the deflector has changed over time and not deflecting enough air into the radiator and my running tempature is on the rise again.
Something simple to look for.

If the temp was that high Id check it manually too. Stop the car, go feel the radiator cap but DONT open it. IF its not extremely hot its probably the gauge sensor. Also at that temp I think the coolant tank should be about boiling. Reason I say these things is just because the gauge says its hot doesn't mean it is. Of course don't take chances with it overheating. If the car is running that hot really usually you'll feel a difference. Mine still doesn't work. I replaced every single part in my cooling system and it was very frustrating, ended up being and still is a faulty sensor. Then again, could be the radiator. Do you see lots of sediment in the fluid?

My car ran the sameway once. It shot up past 250* while at idle. I popped the hood at the intersection I was at and saw the overflow FULL!!!!!
I was like "OH ****"
Earlier, that winter, I had been having problems with the heat fluxuating a lot. So I suspected the heater control valve. I was right.
I'm not telling you that's the problem, but don't overlook it as a cheap solution. IIRC, it was $12 at AutoZone.

The car was running warm, but according to what gauge? If it was an aftermarket one, then proceed with your troubleshooting. But I've found that the stock gauges are garbage. My car would tell me I was running 220 one minute, then 5 miles down the road it was telling me the car was at 160'. Just a thought.

Aight i go and look at it again. Another worry was the guy talking to me about engines and how 305's are a dime a dozen and you can get them anywhere. seemed to me he wanted to tell me something but he didnt.
When I bought my 91RS I had a simular problem. I changed the thermostat and the problem persisted. After looking everything over again i finally noticed that there was some leaves and pine needles sticking out of the sides of the radiator. I took off the cover above the radiator and found the space between the condensor coil and radiator was full of leaves and garbage. After cleaning out all the trash the car returned to normal operating temps.
