Running too rich.

I just got my chip in the mail this morning, its a stage 2 chip from tbichips.com. ive noticed that it is running very rich, you can smell the fuel even when your driveing down the road, it smells like unburned fuel. I thought maybe if i got a fuel pressure regulator and tuned the fuel down a little bit, it might help alot.
Any advice will help.

Thanks

put the stock chip back in, that should solve your problems. The one from tbichips.com obviously delivers far too much fuel for your setup.

I have about had it with these stupid chips. This is the third one ive had and havent noticed anything with any of them. I am going to take it to the track for real test tuesday. I am going to take my stock chip with me and compare the two. If im not happy with the results, im going to put the stock chip back, advance my timing, and regulate my fuel pressure, Good Idea? Ive almost got my laptop running, and when i do im going to start running some winaldl data.

most of those chips are nothing more then modern day snake oil. The only way youll get what you want is to do it yourself.

From your sig it looks like you do not need a chip. The stocker is fine until you do heads and cam, you might possibly want one if you do an intake. That's not saying you cant pick up some hp on a setup like yours with a chip, but it would have to be specific to your car. Make your fuel pressure regulator adjustable and then play around with it when you go to the track, it'll be a fun time.

I agree with Chuck, when I still had my L03, I bought a Jet Stage 2 chip with no other mods besides an open air cleaner, high flow cat, 80 series and AIR delete, damn thing did nothing so I put the stock chip back in to continue running 87 gas.

However, when I installed my 350 H.O. crate motor, car ran like absolute crap with the stock chip in, put the Jet chip in and it ran a little better. Money being tight at the end of my motor swap, I ordered a stage one 350 chip from TBI chips and the car now runs excellent (timing played with much too). No chip is going to give you 25hp on a stock motor or near it. I still do not think my current setup warrants a Stage 2 chip...Just my experience and two cents.

Well that makes all the sense, First, i bought a superchip. I paid 200.00$ for it, didnt help at all, i think it even made it run worse. So i got my money back and went through tbichips.com and bought one of his, nothing, i emailed him and he said i could send it back with some extra cash and he'd send me a stage 2 to see if that helped any, and still nothing. So im pretty fed up with them. I think i might just send it back too. So im just going to play with my timing and fuel pressure for a while.
Thanks for the help!

Your stock FPR and Injectors will provide you with plenty of fuel. Try to flow more air first. I'm running the stock FPR and 305 Injectors on my 350 H.O. crate motor. I think the tbichips chip makes it run a lot richer. I tried using 65pph cop injectors and it ran so rich, it bogged at WOT. I've been running 305 fpr and injectors for two months now and no problems...So do not go to crazy spraying more fuel.

Fred, the larger injectors were definitely killing your low end as the computer was freakin out due to your larger cam, but with the 305 injectors you're killing your higher rpm range. Have you tried the vacuum afpr, if you dont have a custom chip?

I know chuck, VAFPR is HIGH on my priority list of what to do next. I rarely WOT blast the car because I know its dangerous...I hope the VAFPR still runs as well at low end as the stock FPR. Custom chip is low on my list as all I plan to do the car is get the Holley 670 TBI, manifold bored out, VAFPR and 3.42 Gears installed and then unless I save 3 grand for a supercharger, I most likely wont do a custom chip.

if you are doing all those mode, you are going to NEED a custom chip.

No offense, but people also told me 65pph cop injectors and the TBI fuel pump would not 'feed' my engine. Cough cough..... I doubt i'll NEED one, it would probably take .1-.5 off a 1/4 mile run though.

with enough work with a vafpr and timing, yes it will run fairly well, but it will never reach the potential that it could run. i have first hand experiance with the gains that can be had on a basicly stock engine with lots of tuning.

Depends on what you mean by feed. Maximum potential, 65 pph at normal fuel pressure will feed ~280 horse, but the stocker pump is going to have a hard time laying that out. Just for running, not WOT, ~45s (or whatever stock was. It is, as always, open to debate) do that OK. You really should look into a chip, mine ran sick rich that I nearly doubled my gas milage after I started burning my chips, probably saved what money I have in the hardware with gas. At anyrate, the vafpr will help no doubt, also.

What's really odd on the gas mileage thing is that I get BETTER gas mileage with my 350 crate motor than I EVER did with my 305. I would run 87-89 gas with the 305 and get MAYBE 235 to the tank in the city now I get like 250-260 in the city to the tank. I drive it the same, very few WOT blasts to pull out in traffic etc...

I will, definitely get the VAFPR because one of my scholarships came in and I got a nice 320 dollar check to cover expenses this semester.
