Newby lookin for a lil help
Hey everyone, nice to be part of this board, i just bought my frist car, and of course its a 3rd gen. Im in love with it and worked most of my summer to buy this investment. Its a '90 RS with a 305 TBI in it, 70,000 miles on it but everything is in great condition. I jus ordered a new exhaust system (Flowmaster American Thunder series), the old one isnt the greatest. I threw a K&N filter into it last week to start out my upgrades. Now my question to the people here is what steps should i take to start out on improving this car? Im not into the hole make it look fast with nothing to back it up, i like sleepers . I know u guys know your stuff and know what your talking about, iv read posts and its great to see people with knowledge like this and eager to share it. Iv started looking at new carbs and plan on converting it over to TPI, but am still unsure on how to get the most performance out of my money. Any ideas anyone has on this would really help me out. Thanks for your time everyone

Congratulations on the new purchase! You'll love it. Now to the question. I would start w/ shorty headers and a custom y-pipe to finish off the exhaust. Then go the intake route. After that I think that some aftermarket lca's and relocation brackets would do you good! of course thats what I would do to start. That'll give you a few extra ponies and the suspension to hold it. I personally think that at the mostly stock level a tuned suspension is the key to speed. Plus then after thats out of the way and your all tuned in i'd start messing more w/ engine mods for some good hp!
But thats just me. Its your ride and to each his own. Good luck on the new ride and keep us posted on how it comes along.

do a search on this board and you will find a lot. Open element, headers, underdrive pulleys, ultimate tbi mods, gears and posi, stall, etc.
Also, to get the most performance for your money, don't worry about swapping to tpi or carb, at least not yet. There are many other mods you can do now that you would want to do if you swapped injection systems anyways, and they will yield a better gain.

start with the exhaust... you've already done that. After your catback system, a set of headers and a high-flow cat would be a good idea. Upgrade your ignition, cap/rotor, wires, coil and plugs. Do the ultimate TBI mods, a new intake manifold, a computer chip and a set of pulleys. That should keep you, and your wallet, busy for awhile and off to a good start.

my advice is always to fix what is worn out. the newest of these cars is 11 years old now. rebuild the front end, do a tune up, service all the fluids ect. once everything is in good working order, and worn parts are replaced. then start to mod.

Headers and a high flow cat is what I would do next. Also get an open element filter.you can pick one up for like $20 and its easy to install, all you have to do is drill a whole in the bottom for your temp sensor and your set.that really does make a difference.Headers and full exhuast is where youll see the biggest gains on these cars bolt on wise. Also if your looking to go tunedport you have a long road ahead of you.Good luck and welcome to the boards.
