Heads comming off...now what??

So...I grab my 416 heads tomorrow and will be dropping them off to my engine guy probably monday to have them cleaned up and ported etc etc.

Now...while i have the heads off is there anything you guys would recomend that I should take care of, or should I stick to the old "if it aint broke....dont fix it"???

Thanks,
Dave

I would go ahead and clean the tops of the pistons off, and it wouldn't hurt to check and make sure the lifters are in good shape. Can't be too careful.

nope, can't do anything with the rings with just the heads off. That would require a full rebuild. If I were you I would just do a little cleaning where it needs it, check everything to make sure it's in good shape, etc. Just basic maintanance. One piece of advice is to not use anything too abrasive on the pistons when cleaning.

Swap the cam with something a little more aggressive.

Like the Vortec cam on this page for ~$50.

If I didnt already go through a cam swap with it in the summer I would do it....I tossed in an L98 cam that I got cheep....did make a good difference but I still need to get into prom/chip burning etc.

Yea... the cam I showed you and the L98 cam are pretty similar.
