Factory Wheel Spacers on Rear Wheels?

I had both my rear wheels off and noticed that there is about 1/8" spacers on both wheels. Does or did anyone else have these? Did they come from the factory? Can I take them off without any tire rubbing? I have the stock Camaro '91-'92 16" 5 star wheels. I posted this here cause most people have or had the same engine and rear end.

They were required with the iron drums and 16" wheels. The aluminum drums did not need them because they were slightly wider.

I took them off and had no problems with the stock rims, then when I got my 17s it helped not having them because the 17s are a little wider.

Couldn't say for sure since I have never owned a aluminum drum car. That's just what the guy at the GM parts counter told me, he could be wrong.
