TBI Intakes

I was wondering...

I found a Cold Air intake on Ebay Motors. The intake is designed for the 5.0L 5.7L engine however its refering to a 1988-1995 GMC Tahoe Truck. I was wondering if the TBI on those trucks is the same as the one on my TransAm. This CAI might be what I am looking for.

Thanks

if im not mistaken, we have gone over that set up before. i think that the bonnet is too tall for f-bodies. im pretty sure that was the conclusion that every one came to. i could be wrong, but i think thats the same set up that was being discussed.

Reason why I ask is because I just came back from our local muscle car parts shop called teh Steering wheel. Guy specs in supping up 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen GM vehicles. He will supe other cars but his preference is working on these cars. I askd him for a price on a good set of headers and an intake system and he mentioned a Cold Air Intake and said he can get them but they are 400$ for the intake, 450$ for the headers, 250$ to install it all. I am thinking his business must be dying for service after looking at the price of a new CAI from Ebay would only cost 80$ as well as headers are no where near 450$....and that 250 to install well....not sure whats going on there.

Some are probably wondering "why not install the headers yourself.." wel the answer is simple...I know nothing about cars except what I can learn from books. If I could I would be taking a course in automotive mechanics however I don't have the time. I will just pay a mech buddy of mine to drop all the goods in when it comes time to upgrading the car I guess. Steering wheel is a cool place to go for an apraisal however horrid for pricing on parts.

I think however I am just gonna bite the bullet and give the CAI a try. If it works then I will have room to run the strut brace under the hood as the drum is definately smaller then the open air element or my current stock setup and will make room for the bar of the brace. Even if I have to modify the CAI to fit properly it should be possible.

...horrid prices is right! IMO you dont need a auto tech class to work on cars. you need service manuals and the proper tools. as far as your cai goes, i wouldnt pay that much for something your gonna have to have cut up to make make it work. IMO, you would be better off going to a bone yard and swiping some tpi intake pieces. then you could fab up some duct work that runs to your grills, and you would have cold/ram air. r90camarors has a nice set up using these exact pieces. look around he and swerve driver both have what i think are exceptional air intake systems. you should be able to find pics of them. not trying to be an ***, but now that i think about it, swerve drivers system might be a little out of your league though. its outta mine. im gonna do something similar to r90camarors set up.

doing a search will turn up lots of info, try this thread I believe this is the same topic https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...+intake+on+tbi
reason they say its for a truck or tahoe is they have ample hood clearance, the stock tbi cars have enough room for and combo that is 3" tall or shorter, unless you modify the hood or buy a different one.

I don't like the design either. Just looking at it I would think you wouldn't get as good distribution as an open element or dual cold air setup. $450 is absurd!!!! If you really want it just buy the $80 one and put the thing on yourself. Even if you don't know anything about cars you can still do it in like 2 minutes.

Give us a link to where we could buy this cold-air setup. I would like to talk to the people and see how tall it is. If you could point that thing foward you could do as said above and hook it up to a TPI filter setup in front of the radiator with duel filters. I'm really interested in this!

It just seems like the part that goes onto the TBI unit it to restrictive and it seems like it shrouds the opening of the TBI unit. I think a dual snorkel is the way to go if you want a true cold air.

I found it on Ebay Motors. I brought the picture into Steering wheel and that was the one that he was gonna sell me. They have different types on Ebay.

I was just wondering mainly if this kinda setup would hinder performance, increase it, or do nothing.
