Im curious, what type of mods are you guys running and still passing emissions with? The county I live in is going to have emissions soon, so, I'll have to put the cat back on and shelve the plans for the 10:1 CR, LT4 cammed 383. Anyone able to get away with using a 350 or do you have to keep the 305?

there isn't really a whole lot we can do here in cali... there is always that one shop that'll do it and pass it for some extra cash... he he he

mods in sig, but im having trouble passing smog. But its because i have a bad cat and a bad EGR. Im thinking that the free flowing exhaust isnt giving my egr enough backpressure to open, so imma try a negative backpressure valve off of a TBI truck and see if that solves it.

I have a tbi 350 that passes in CA as a 305.
(I have to use the stock air cleaner to pass the visual)
This is with Crane Compucam 2030 HR , Edelbrock Performer tbi intake, SLP Headers, 3" Catco cat, Turbo City ported throttle body
and custom chip and 160 degree stat.
Everything has an E.O. # from C.A.R.B., except the adjustable fuel pressure regulator, that is hard to see.

man, you can get away with a 350 and i know the emissions i'll have to pass here wont be anywhere near as strict as what you probably have to put up with. RICH, what kinda times are you running?
TKD, did you have to do anything special to get the car to pass emissions? I thought maybe with all the exhaust mods you might have a hard time with the EGR valve and backpressure? I looked and summit says those heads aren't "for use on pollution controlled vehicles." They full of crap?

We have people down here who have a 350 with an LT4 hotcam, but with TPI (see Kevin91z). U can swap in only what was available for your car at that year. For example, for 92, u can have a 350 because it was available that year, but u must have a TPI on it.
U have to have a functional egr.
As far as cams go, I dont know anyone running bigger than the hotcam and passing, although there might be some.

That is half true. The way the law is written in California, you can swap in anything that was availbe for the same model as long as it comes from the same year or newer. So on one end of the spectrum, you can go take an LS1 out of a 2002 and drop it in as long as you retain all smog equipment that came on it in 2002. Or you could take a TPI setup or and drop that on top of your motor and it would be perfectly legal as long as you retained all emissions equipment. You just need to take it to a referee station for them to inspect and if it clears they will put a sticker in your door jamb for future emissions tests.

Exactly what acclaim said. You can even put a BB in, you just have to match the config of the "Light Duty" 1500ss.
What the referee has said to me is
"we dont really care about internals or cam, We cant tell the differences anyways, we just check the timing and let the sniffer do the rest"
Dont take it literally. But you can get away with a LOT. No one is gonna run a casting number on a head to make sure the head is smog legal though. They dont get paid enough.
Hope this helps.

Totally agree with what Aklaim and Charlo said. My 83 Z28 Cross-fire injected car had the original motor in it (305), I dumped it and put in a new gm350 and took it to a referee station and it was approved no problem cause I had the original smog stuff still on of course. Gave me a sticker and I was on my way. Later I plan to convert to a single TBI system from later year camaro's, the ref said that should be no problem at all as long as it's from newer cars and I keep all smog stuff on.
