Weird question, but what color is your water pump?

I know this seems kind of weird, but I'm about to replace my water pump, which is not stock and is all rusty on my 92 rs with the L03. I've seen pics of people's pumps painted black and bare rust and I want a mostly stock look. Is your factory pump bare metal or painted black. Also, what year is your car. Thanks for the help.

My pump is black form the factory and is a 1990. Every other stock pump I have seen was black as well.

Mine has some realistic, cruddy, used oil type of paint on it. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was real oil!!

Mine was rusty when I bought my car, and the motor had been rebuilt the year before I got it. I assume that was a replacement pump. A year later that pump failed and I noticed when I bought a rebuild, it was already starting to rust around the edges, even though it was painted, so I fogged it black.
I think the paint on most replacement pumps is only intended to prevent rust until the part is sold (think headers).

paint it. flat or gloss black will look fine and help protect from rust

purely cosmetic.... just looks.

even if the pump sat in salt water for 100 years, it would not corrode thru. its thick cast iron.

99% of the replacement pumps ive seen, have been painted though...

i know most factory pumps were not painted... id say they never were, but im not confident in that fact..... and theres no way to prove it anyway..

id either leave it unpainted or fog it the same black as the rest of the engine.
