100 - 105mph problems ?

okay... i confess, i sped today.

i'm a proud owner of a 1989 camaro rs, 305 v8 tbi, 5spd. i was on the interstate and got up to about 105mph and when i barely let my foot off the accelerator, the car violently jerked forward... i thought i broke something...

is that the speed limiter... or... did.. i break something?

Speed limiter. Set at 105 for most cars. There is a tech article on how to get around it or get an aftermarket chip, most disable it. Or better yet learn how to burn your own and you can turn it into a rev limiter.

I' got 115mph speedo and mine shuts off about 30 to 45 seconds after I pass that. I thought all the F-Bodys with the limiters had them set at 118mph?

the speed limiter depends on the tires that were on the car from the factory.

i dont know what my original tire size was but now ive got 245/65 out back and my car has been shutting down at at about 117. i checked it by having a friend with a VERY lightly modded **** burner run me on the interstate. his shuts down at 115 and i continued to pull away.... heheheh

the cars that originaly the the (i can't remeber which, either S or T) rated 15" wheels from the factory got a 112mph cutoff speed. that is the point that the ECU figures 112, so tiresize, ect will effect it, and the factory speedo is fairly inacurate at those speeds, so the actualy reading may vary. but one the VSS pulses tell the ECU you are at 112, it cuts fuel.

wow, thats an awful big discrepency there, could my tire size really be letting me go that fast before shut down? or was it just a fluke you think?

if the tire diameter is larger than stock, you speedo will read slow. example: if speedo reads 110, with larger tires, you may actualy be going 115.

the other thing is, remeber speedo's become pretty inaccurate at those speeds. take your speedo reading with a grain of salt. when you are talking over 100mph. if you were to run a scan tool, you would see the speed the computer is reading, that point won't excede the fuel cut-off speed in the chip.

Dewey is right. When I went from my 15" stock wheels to my 17's my speedo went off by 6 or 7 mph and I could go that much faster before I hit the limiter.

Mine WAS set at 109.( One of the benefits of burning your own chip.)

And mine is at 255+, no joke.
In it's place is a rev limiter of 6000rpm. Code is good, code is great, I thank it for the ricers I ate.
Too bad the the limiters are fuel cut. Very effective but very hard. A soft limiter like ignition retard would be nice .

going through the mountains last year, passed the 115 point and then car completely turned off, any one else here paniced when your car shut down at 115 and u didnt know if itd turn back on or not. My heart skipped about 8 beats. But does anyone know why itd completely turn off, or did it just deprive the engine of fuel so long, that it stalled

it cuts the fuel, if you are still in gear, it should come back on after your speed goes down 5-6mph

funny thing lastnight

i was trying to get this stupid SGI box hooked up... for thoes that dont know: i have a T56 and a electric speedo. so i need to convert a VERY fast T56 signal to a slower 3rdgen signal.

thats what this box is suppost to do.... but i couldnt get it to work... to test the T56 VSS, i just plugged it straight into the car... bypassing the box.

well i had all the wires in the car right there, so im sitting there idling, top down, in my neighborhood, when all of a sudden theres a bark and snarl.. like 3 ft from me..... theres a dog barking at my car.

i rev and he takes a step back.... so i goto pull away... i get about 10 -20 ft away before im going fast enough (about 15mph) that the speedo with teh uber fast T56 Vss reads 114..... bam! car cuts off.

drammit.
start again... pull stupid wire loose as pulling away... stall from stupid 2.73s. dammit (putting 4.11 rear in TONIGHT )

at this point the stupid mutt is jumping like mad growling at my car, and actually puts his front paws on the passenger door.
i mentally say fug it, pull the VSS wire , start the car, rev, dump clutch BRRRRRRR and pull away.

fast forward to this morning. as im taking the trash to the curb, i get to hear a guy in the neigborhood, obviously a lil pissed off talking about someone burning out and rasing all kinds of hell infront of his house lastnight and about the damn dogs going thru the garbage again.... lmao.. whoops.

I remember when i hit the limiter for the first, and only time in my TA. I was speeding along pulling away from this kid in his modded civic when all of a sudden silence. No more roar of the aerochamber or anything. I thought i blew up the motor or something! then it all came back, it was strange lol

The first chip I made for my friends 91 RS had the speed limiter set for 10 mph, you should have seen the look on his face when I told him I must of blown up his motor.
