Computer Compatible Cam for LO3

Okay, I know everyone is going to tell me that I should get a LT-1 cam for my LO3 but there are two problems with that;

1) I can't burn chips

2) I live in CA and don't know if I can pass smog with an LT-1 Cam.

So What do you guys think of this cam?

Comp Cam Hyd Flat Tappet Cam

AVD DUR   DUR .050   LIFT
Int Exh       Int Exh    Int Exh LSA
252 260     206 212   .425 .440 112

They advertise that this cam requires no computer modification, and is smog legal in CA.

What do you guys think of this?
What Kind of performance gains can I expect out of this?

nope.

i have a 206/216 112 cam, i can't pass smog, and it can hardly runs with the stock chip.

truth is the only real 'computer compatable' cam in our cars, is the stocker, at that is marginal.

This should be the moto for our cars. I could not have worded it better. The stock tune can barely even support a full exhuast car WITH stock heads and cam. You are going to have to go the extra step and at least data log your car and have someone else do the burning for you.

they also have a weaker camshaft (yes, it is possible)

.384/.407 184/194
this is about the equivalent of the stock camshaft with 1.6 rockers

Im guessing that the top cam would be a pretty good mod with 1.6 rockers and would require minimum tuning because of its low duration.

Maybe I'm niave, but why would they advertise that thier cam is computer compatible when it's actually not?

Because they have never installed one and had to drive it every day. The car will run but no where near its potential. Some cam swaps makes cars run slower because of the tune.

Most aftermarket cams are advertised for 350's not 305's so the same cam would be a bit more wild in a 305. I could see that cam working in a 350 TPI car with no computer problems but our cars is a different story.

exactly, most computer controlled camshafts with high durations are meant for 305-350 TPIs. The ones i listed are the 305 TBI computer controlled cams from crane.

The one I listed was also for a 305 TBI.

It will work in a 305 TBI physically, that's why they list it as such, but the manufacturers intend that cam to be used in a 350 sbc but it will work in any sbc. The computer friendly part is based on a 350 with TPI.

edit: I just looked up at the original post and that cam is a flat tappet cam anyways. You want a roller cam, flat tappet cam won't work in your engine with your lifters. Look around for a roller cam.

that is a truck camshaft which might be why it is smog legal

look at it this way:

$200 for a aftermarket roller cam that may or maynot pass

$50 for a LT1 cam + $50-$100 for TBIchips.com tune (or equiv) and very likely pass.

my advice:

smog the car witht he stock cam, then swap the LT1 cam in, then get her tuned and settled so that you're set when the next smog check comes.
