hey,
sorry, i assume this has been asked several times in one form or another, but i searched and didn't find much relevant info. i've got a friend with a mostly stock 92 rs (only mods are open element, k&n, flowmaster muffler...nothing else), and i noticed the other day as he was driving by that he's running seriously rich (he nailed it, and i saw the black smoke). i looked at his car today and his tailpipes are black. i assumed this was the result of a bad 02 sensor. anything else this could be on a stock TBI?

Has the car had a tune up in awhile? Dirty passages can cuase these cars to run rich. I would take off the TBI and clean it well. Clean out all of the funk that is in the tiny passages on the bottom. Also, change the fuel filter and clean out the PVC. A little black smoke at WOT isn't that big a deal and even newer cars will do that. However, he should not be really rich. If the cleaning procedures do not change things you will want to do a full tune up and replace the following.
Cap
Plugs
Wires
Rotor
Fuel filter
02 sensor

thanks. i'll probably take the whole thing apart and clean it, since it's not much of a deal with TBI. it's running rich as h*ll though, i mean, i can smell the gas in the exhaust when he's idling (after he's romped it a few times). when he romps it, i can see a LOT of black smoke. it's always seemed to run a little weak for a stocker L03....so this explains a lot. from the shape the body is in (flaking red paint, a good number of dents...he only paid like $700 for it), i doubt it's been tuned up for a while, so i'll probably have him pay for the fuel filter everything else. anything else i should worry about?

it just needs a good tune. Beside what I mentioned to clean, you want to clean out the IAC really well. A clogged one of those can also make things not run so well.Originally posted by 80smetalfan

Define really rich. Our engines are set rich from the factory, so if it's stock, it's probably just a little rich. If it needs a good tune up, it'll be that much richer. Takes these guys' advice and start with a good tune up and make sure everything is clean. There's also a tech article to make the fpr in the tbi adjustable, may wanna look at that.
okay, cleaned everything out and replaced what needed to be replaced. however i need a gasket for it. it's the gasket that sits right on top of the injectors, the first one you have to worry about when taking the intake off (unless you count the one under the air cleaner). what is this gasket called? the only place in my town that has it is a o'reilly's and they only sell it with a borg-warner TBI tune-up kit that's $30, and has a lot of gaskets that he doesn't need replaced. i'm looking at www.napaonline.com, but i can't find the stupid gasket anywhere, mainly cause i don't know what it's called. what is this called? am i just gonna have to get a full kit? also, would a silicone gasket hold up long (yes, i know, silicone + gasoline= stupid, but i'm not using it as a head gasket)?

Be carefull what type silicone you use on your engine it can wipe out your o2 sensor.

That would be the injector pod gasket. You will be hard pressed to find it as a stand alone part. You can order the jegs injector pod spacer that comes with a new gasket. It is only $20 and gives you the spacer as well.

Which one did you buy? I could be wrong. I do not have one but all of the pictures I have seen of the spacer kits show a new gasket is included.Originally posted by 305RSlc
