My 357 with ZZ4 cam is alive
Just fired it up for the first time last night. I been working on this swap in my spare time for about four weeks.
Last winter I bought a 1990 350 truck short block and had it bored out .040" and assembled. About 4 weeks ago I pulled the 305 engine and tranny. I reused the ZZ4 cam and S/R torquer 305 heads from my LO3.
My first surprise came when I installed the roller cam in the 350 block. The block was machined for a roller cam but the bolt spacing for the cam retaining plate was wider. I couldn't believe they would make two different cam retaining plates for a SBC. No big deal, I was abile to get a plate the next day and go on with my life. Surprise #2 was when I tightened down the lifter retaining spider thing, the bolts bottomed out before the spider was drawn down all the way. Again, no big deal, easy to fix, but it kind of alarmed me and I was glad that I noticed it. Surprise #3 was when a 350 knock sensor and ESC modual cost me $108. I got over it though.
Well for now I got to break in this motor so I'm running my stock size TBI so I wont be tempted to hammer it. It also made the enitial start up easier. We changed the band pulse width in the chip to compensate for more cubic inches and it starts and runs fine. I drove it arround (real easy) alittle bit last night . Today I'll correct the blms in the chip. Should be good enough for normal driving till I get it broke in, then a bigger TB and some more FP and alot of chip tunning.

On my LO3 with ZZ4 cam combo I was running 65PPH injectors at 15 PSI with a ultimate TBI throttlebody. I had done alot of chip tuning on the 305 to run the cam, so when I bumped the band pulse width up the whole tune got more gass to compensate for the bigger motor. I realize that IT's not enough for PE or WOT but for normal driving its working fine. I am going out now to check the BLM's. I expect to adjust them, but I think it will be in the ball park.
My plan (after break in) is to slap my pod on a larger TB and set the FP up for some WOT tunning. Of course I'll have to do my BLM's over again. But the spark timing for the combo should be about the same so I won't need to do much there. Ive got 9.8 compression now so I may have to drop the whole spark table a couple degrees but that would take about 2 seconds.

Well I did some dataloging and burned a chip. Everything seems to being going fine. I need to send Joby some money some day, I love that Win ALDL. I put about 50 miles on it today and I like it. The ZZ4 cam runs smother in a larger engine. Cant wait to hammer it and see what it does. I'll let you all know when I do.

you'll be camming it up again soon i bet. how can you go from a zz4 in a 305 and be happy with "only"
a zz4 cam in the 357 LOL...
sounds like fun, cant wait till i finally get mine in SOMEDAY!

Ya, I know just what your saying. But I havent got WOT tuned with a 2 barrel TBI yet. It might be hard enough to tune this combo to feed both ends of the spectrum. (enough FP for WOT and still be ablile to tune the idle) I get the feelling that the next cam would be expensive, cause when I got the fueling requirments met I would probably need to start looking at beafing the rear end and chassis.
