Open Element II

Back again after some reading of the Open Element Bible and looking at other links. One discrepancy I found between K&N's site and the "NEW TO TBI" thread is whether or not a flat base air cleaner is the same as the raised base K&N filter setups.

http://www.knfilters.com/universal/X-stream.htm

As I do not have a cowl hood, nor do I plan on ever buying one, will someone point out the size and type (raised base or dropped base) of setup I need in the above link?

Both the Open Element FAQ and the "New to TBI" thread do not give me the specific answers that I an looking for. Please understand this and please do not close this thread. Thank you to all that are willing to help me.

I am not sure of that. I would call them and see how exactly they describe it. Since they has a listed PN for a drop base I would have to assume the raised based ones they are talking about are the same as a flat base/non drop base. If I were you I would go to a parts store and buy a 14x3 open element. Later if you want you can add the 14x3 K&N element. This is a much cheaper route when it is all said and done. I got mine from summit and just ordered a filter to replace the paper one that came with it. I later added on one of their extreem lids. I will see if I can dig up some part numbers for you.

I took a cue from shifty and installed a knn extreme assembally.
-- although i do have the cowl hood that was stock on some ? all formys ? and some older f-bodys as well.

the p/n I of the air cleaner was 66-3000.

IIRC it was non-drop base, 3 7/8 " total height.

Installation was a snap, and I double wrapped the coil wires with electrical tape first, then 1/4 split convoluted over that.

Hrmm. A freind of mine told me that I could get the open-element and the x-stream top for around $80 but on summitracing.com it is priced at about $125.

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...3000&x=18&y=11

Does anyone know a cheaper site or place to buy it?

i bought my 14x3 drop base chrome open air element air cleaner from a machine shop here in town for $24. then ordered the propern K&N air filter from summit for $46 with shipping. I also taped and wire loomed the coil wire. very good idea. I noticed imrovments simply pulling out of the drive way. however, i was wondering about removing the <fiberglass?> heat shield under the hood. Its not causing any clearance probs, but it sits awfully close to the air cleaner top.

Hot Rod mag just did a article on open element air cleaners from K&N. Granted they did theirs for a carb setup but they said the Xstreme lids hurt performance compared to just a lid. The air got to messed up inside the filter. I myself have had a 14x3 w/Xstreme air lid and didn't notice anything from it. Besides the hood clearance is so little I don't think much air would flow between the hood and the Xstreme lid anyway.

Acrually, when combined with a stubstack, the XStream top made the most hp. Either way, I think if you have any type of cowl induction setup the Xstream top will help use all that cold air.

i have this sneaking suspesion that a regulare 14x3 paper element, flows enough air to support what HP you can make with TBI.

just a thought

your probably correct, but it seems that more and more OE's are coming with reusable elements now-thus jacking the price up to compensate for the reusable feature.

The base is a very important part of the filter set up. They have a lot to do with the flow. So I would think twice about just getting a cheap auto parts store filter and upgrading with a better filter and/or top.

Thats the reason I went with the Moroso Racing Flat-Bottom filter. I did upgrade to a K&N filter though.

as long as on the subject i had a tough time finding any air clearer that yould clear the throttle shaft where it attaches to the throttle cable. 454 TB. are the physical spec on 454 that much different than standard issue dual TB 305 series? it (shaft) struck the bottom of the air cleaner on both i tried. i could have added a spacer but chose not to due to tight clearance to hood(vette). solution was to use the edelbrock oval and that was fine(looked nice too).

Well, I just bought a regular K&N setup. I hope I bought the right part...Please tell me if I didn't. The part number on SUmmitracing.com is KNN-60-1260. I just got it in today and it looks pretty tall...

As long as it is a 14x3 element you will be fine.

Crap...
"Air Cleaner, Chrome, 14 in. Diameter x 4 in. Filter Height, 5 5/8 in. Total Height,Element 9/16 in. Above Carb"

Does anyone know how I can make this work or if I can return things to Summit?

I dont know if you can make that work -- but, Summit is pretty good about returns. Make sure everything is back in the plastic if you took it out, repackaged, and fill out the exhange order form on the back of your summit invoice. You foot the bill for shipping.

it might be cheaper to just go buy a 3inch filter, should fit then. Dont know how much shipping would be for you.
