Open Element vs. Double Snorkel

Open Element vs. Double Snorkel

A lot of people are saying that the open element is so good. I honestly do not understand how it can be better. Both the open element and the double snorkel are constricted by the regular hoods, but it the snorkel can be modified to increase air flow. As far as I know, the open element (O.E.) cannot. I know that the OE is not hid under a cover, but just sits there under the hood. I would think that with the double snorkel, you could hook up suction fans with toggle switches to pull more air inside the snorkels. I don't think this can be done as easy with the OE, but what do I know.

I am in limbo to pick one, so I need some good evidence.

Any suggestions? Arguments? Explanations?

I have both and I have not noticed a difference in performance for one over the other. I think the dual snorkel looks better and looks more impressive. But I will say its a pain in the butt for taking the thing apart everytime I want to work on something.

A lot of hot air is better then a minimal amount of slightly less hot air. It is also cheaper. Remember, we have 170hp, lets focus on the real problem. How can you modify the OE to increase flow? The induction surface area on an open element is enough to feed 50 motors. The only way to get more into the TBI unit is with forced induction. To really make the most of the ambient pressure, you need to get the air at its most dense state. That would provide a slightly denser charge. However, you need to get the air from outside of the car and not just near the front of the hood or in the engine bay. It is hard to beat the practicality of the open element.

I had the stocl single snorkal, then went to an open element, then I designed my own CAI. The stock one suck a donkey, the open element made a noticable improvement, especially up top, and the CAI made the most improvemt, and gave me about .2-.3 tenths. If I had to get rid of my CAI, i would deff go back to the OE.

Oh yeah, my CAI was made using the stock single snorkal.

Anyway you want. As long as you take ambient air and some how put it into the motor. Some use TPI cold air kits and make some sort of bonnet to fit on top of thier TBI unit.

best way to get cooler air to the TB is an open front-open back hood scoop and seal the aircleaner to the underside of the hood so the heat that the engine builds up isnt sucked into the intake, heat extractors arent a bad idea, but try making them look good on a stock hood you could get the BigBlock stinger hood from ASCD i think they have one dont remember. and be done with it. but your talking lots of $$$ for cooler air, youd get more of modding the engine and adding some other goodies.
