no start after l98 cam swap in l03

no start after l98 cam swap in l03

Ok....So i swap a cam into the l03 making sure I line the cam gear dot and the crank dot. put the distibuter back in with the rotor pointed to #1.. set the valve lash.. and go to start the engine. and it starts backfireing through the throtle body..... Any suggestions will be greatly apprecated

Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
IIRC, The dot to dot will be #6 TDC. Rotate the dist. 180 degrees and you should be set.

Correct. Dot to dot just allows proper allingment of the chain gears. You need to rotate another 180* so that the cam gear is at 12 oclock and the crank gear is at 6 oclock. This will put your #1 at TDC with the rotor in the proper posistion. Technically you can do dot to dot but then you would have to re-arrange your plug wires and adjust your rotor accordingly.

So to fix this.

Pull the distributor
Pull the number one plug
Bump the engine over with your finger on the hole
When you feel pressure you are at TDC for #1
Put the distributor back in now with the rotor facing the #1 plug wire terminal on the cap
Start and set timing

Thanks guys thats what it was.....I've been working on cars for years and I should have figured that out but I was exstreamly tired satuday night when I wasinstalling the cam.....Soooo any way thanks again for snapping me out of my stupidity.:hail:
