help cam choice

Well herei is my delema, I have 2 cams to chose from to go into my LO3. Both are brand new cams

#1 L98 cam
202 207 .404 .415 114.5

#2 compucam 2031
208/218 dur. 438/458 112

which one with be a better cam for me? Im looking for computer friendly right now only b/c i dont have the equipment yet.
I want to put in #2 but my brother things that will be toomuch cam, and to go with the L98 cam , it wont require that much follow up work so thats why im posting this.

Please keep in mind what my current mods are right now.

thanks for your thoughts. I know either cam is miles ahead of what came out thats for sure.

If you cant burn a new chip, the L98 cam will work better as it has a higher LSA and is slightly milder.

I agree completely with iroc22.

The L98 cam will be much more computer friendly while the compucam will give you more computer problems but will overall be the ideal cam for your L03 with some tuning.

#2, if you're gonna go through the trouble of a cam swap don't crap around with a dinky stock cam. Do it right.

well thanks for the advise guys i think im going to gowith the l98 cam for right now b/c of my limited chip burning tools. ill save the other cam for now . i do drive it semi-regularly again so drivability is important to me right now.

Im also in the process of gathering parts for a bigger motor so the 305 will only be in there till hopefully sometimein the spring so this is just one of those spur of the moment projects.

Cam swaps aren't hard at all, and he will regret picking the second cam especially if it's a daily driver IMO. Gas mileage and idle will be affected and honestly without a new prom I doubt the bigger cam will give any more power increases over the L98.

Removing the intake manifold, radiator, timing cover, etc all for a cam who's spec's aren't much greater than what you could achieve with a simple 1.6 rocker swap isn't worth it.

You will want to do chip work with any cam swap you do. Even if it is the L98 cam. If not the car won't have that much more power and you will have all kinds of drivability problems. That second cam has the better profile and both would behave failry identical with the stock tune. I geuss it depends what you consider a lot of work to change a cam along with the cost of the cam itself.

Personally man, I think your car is already too far out of tune for my liking. I think a cam would just further pronounce the tuning flaws. You really need to get into the chip tuning at this point before a cam swap. Get it running really good with what you have, then you'll have some experience tuning. Swap the cam in after that and tune it up and you'll get huge gains over what you would get by just throwing in the cam on a stock tune. You've done everything else to prepare the car really well for some power, now tuning is the next step that has to be taken.
