Lt1 cam swap help a newb
Hey guys, I've been reading the board, and I want to do the LT1 cam swap for my car, but no matter how many threads I read its just not coming together for me. The car is a daily driver and I just want it to have some pep over what the LO3 is giving me right now. It seems that every thread I read something different is said. So here are my questions, or if there is one thread is "correct", please tell me. I just need some clarification.
Is all I need the cam itself? I've heard most people replace the rockers and springs as well, what is the best type to get for an LT1 cam setup? After that, I understand that I need to get a new chip burned. While its on the neverending list, i just dont have the money for it right now, is there anyone that can burn me a chip for a stock LO3 with just that, and exhaust modifications? Thanks guys, I've only got this car, so I can afford to screw things up, no money to fix it
Edit: Basically, is there anyplace where i can find a step by step- do this, then this, then this, using these parts.... That kind of thing. I'm sure someone has posted SOMETHING like that at one point, I just can't find it.

If you install an LT1 cam your going to have to burn a custom chip, no way around it. If you want your car to be alittle bit faster do a full exhaust first (plus, , then some 3.42 or 3.73 gears. Those mods will keep you happy for awhile. If you are new to working on cars you dont want to jump into a project like install a cam until you get some experience working on your car.

Youd need the cam, new timing set (might as well replace it if your there), various gaskets and RTV sealer, harmonic balancer puller, and socket adapter so you can turn the crank with a breaker bar without using the harmonic balancer bolt. There are probably other things in there as well but I cant think of them now. You may also have to raise the motor up a tad and drop the pan so you can get the timing chain cover back on without hacking at its corners. All in all its not super hard but itll be a solid 10 if your new to working on cars.
As a mod by itself I dont recommend any sort of cam swap. If its in conjunction with tuning and youve done most of the other mods to help it breathe then its definatly a good mod.

I asked that same question a while ago. I got some responses. Here is the link to my thread on the topic

I am gonna wait until I can get some heads to compliment the upgrade...as well as a posi 3.42 rear end and a shift kit to firm things up....oh and either the chip burning gear or one of those tasty prominators.
