Hey guys, I got some quick questions.

thanks,
Kyle

It is for emmisions. It injects air into the exaust stream (or catylist) to help aid in the reaction in the CAT, so that it burns more of the unburnt fuel in the exuast.
It won't have much of a performance change by removing it, but it is illegal to remove or tamper with emmissions equipment.

As quoted from Chilton's, "AIR or Air Injection Reaction System is used to provide additional oxygen to continue the combustion process after the exhaust gases leave the the combustion chamber. Air is injected into either exhaust port(s), the manifold(s) or the catalytic converter by an engine driven pump or smog pump. The AIR system helps reduce Hydrocarbons (HC) and Carbonmonoxide (CO) content into the exhaust gases by injecting air into the exhuast ports during cold engine startup. The air injection helps the cat to reach the proper temp quicker during warmup. When the engine is warm, the AIR system injects air into the beds of a 3 way converter to lower the HC and CO content in the exhaust."
Components
-Smog pump or AIR pump driven by engine
-AIR control valves (check valves, switches, etc)
-Air flow and hoses
-Dual-bed 3 way cat
If you take it off, your engine will pollute a little more than it should and it will be considered illegal to drive daily unless it is used for racing use or something. It might make an increase in hp if you ditch it but you can add lots of mods that are 50 state legal and still keep it if you are going to drive it a lot. This is just my opinion but read what other people have to say too

well I live in OK, so we don't deal with inspection. I was just looking at how much that clogs up my engine bay. oh well I guess I can live with it.

No! Get rid of it! You're right, it IS ugly.
