Research done....Going with 4bbl TBI

After gathering 12 TPI injectors, sensors, and a 730 ecm...i almost swipped my credit card for a nice new HSR. However I decided to wait

When i started the search for 12 sec TBI thread and got nailed for expecting a 400+hp TBI, how come no one came out and mentioned a 4bbl??

Heres my latest:

This is all based on currently having a TBI (tbi board so i figure everyone does

$1330 for the kit

Thats the total and then youll have a good ECU to handle everything as opposed to trying to burn chips (realtime will help a lot too since i already have a laptop)

Compare this to a TBI to HSR swap:
Stealth Ram manifold - $300
Fuel rail kit w/regulator - $220
Fuel line kit - $100
8 24# injectors - $50-100 (if your lucky)
7730 - $20
Then either repin it or get a harness - $200-500 (depending on what route you take)
58 MM throttle body - $200
Chip burning stuff - $150
Fuel pump - $100
New sensors - $100
Air cleaner - $50
Total around ~$1300 (cutting corners)

About the same price but consider all of which is involved with an HSR swap. The 4bbl kit saves headaches and time.

Now tests have shown that HSR and MPFI kits only outperformed 4bbl by about 10hp and that was with a 700cfm unit. With the 900 there would be little diff if not an improvement over the others.

FRMULA88 is running under a 12.5 with a 4bbl. Im thinking about going for that.

anybody want to chime in?

ps - i was thinking about going without the C950 and using the 747 with a second driver to run the addition 2 injectors. that would cut $600 from my costs. however tuning would be much harder since im a prom novice

Can MAP, IAC, TPS be reused from prior TBI setup or should i go for Holley stuff?

Yeah it's TBI, but it's not exactly GM TBI, thats why no one suggested it. For what your wanting to do it's the only way with TBI. I personally wouldn't spend 1300$ and not go MPI. To many benifits to not having the fuel going through the intake. Also keep in mind that aftermarket ecm's don't have alot of the drivablitly features that OEM ecm's have. Also keep in mind that tuning an aftermarket ecm still requires alot if not all of the same knowledge that DIY prom tuning takes. People just get scared when they look at their first bin and don't understand every single parameter.

In the end it all comes down to money, no one keeps TBI because it's the best FI system out there, it's not. People keep TBI because it's what they have, and because it's cheap. I have 200 bucks in my whole TBI system. I wanted FI and I wanted it now, TBI was the economical solution and a good way for me to start learning about FI. When funds permit I'm steping up to MPI with a home made intake and junk yard injectors at that. I'll end up haveing less than 200$ in my MPI setup, granted thats with me doing all the work and finding lots of good deals. In reality no one out side of this board is going to be impressed that you got 400 hp out of TBI. Do what works best for you.

Ive heard the C950 units are actually quite good. The programing is real time allowing easier tuning, no chips, and support is given from their site. Presets/templates and what not are downloadable so i wont be spending months learning the ropes of chip burning. This is what ive heard from good reviews. The downside has only been price....

I would still be running my 747 because the holley ECU runs seperate. The C950 just does fuel/timing and all on its own. Have you had experience or know much about it? Im just throwing ideas out so any info is very helpful.

The reason I wanted to avoid MPFI is because of a good setup costing too much. If I get can something planned that doesnt cost over $2000 then ill be on my way to MPFI. A TPI to HSR swap costs about $700. A TBI to HSR swap would cost an extra $300 at least on top of that for TB and plus another $50 for injectors (thats assuming i find some decent 36# at a junkyard) If you recommend MPFI over any TBI in the long run then i hear you. Im leaning back towards 8 injectors....

The C950 will do everything you need. It controls the IAC and can control 4 TBI injectors. The only thing it will not do is control the TCC.
