How does this combo sound?
Starting with the GM LO5 replacement engine, swap the cam for the GMPP 206/216 or perhaps the Ramjet cam, 1.52 roller rockers in the stock heads. Using the Edelbrock TBI intake I already have along with a high flow TB unit from Turbo City. Finish off with a custom prom. I know it won't be a super hp engine but I think it will be a good starting point and will give me a solid foundation to build on. Power will be going through a 700R4 that will be rebuilt by Hawk's with their Stage 2 rebuild. Let me know what you guys think.

Everything sounds good except for the stock heads. Get rid of them. Some normal stock heads like the 350 tpi heads would work ok, provided you dont have alot of lift at the valves.

I'd say the same about the heads if they are the swirlports. How does the price of the LO5 long block compare with say the L98 short block and then installing differant heads and the cam of your choice?

The LO5 runs $1677.00 from SDPC. Like I said this will be the starting point. I'm putting together a package deal that will include a tranny rebuild so I can't go hog wild on the engine just yet. I also will be swapping the cam for either an LT4 or their "IROCZ" cam that specs out at 206/216 at .050. I'm also planning for some dyno time and a custom prom and a high flow TB unit. Total engine price right now looks to be around $2500 and then add in the tranny at another $1K and you see why I'm doing it this way. Plus it will give me the opportunity to do a build up with my boy who has become quite the car guy since hitting 13.
