Another of the most frequently asked questions Open element
Ok I looked at that sticky up there and didnt say anything about my problem so here
I got an Edelbrock Open element courtesy of Autozone.........after I paid them
Well heres the deal If I leave the spacer on the stud comes up short if I take it off the base is too low(I think)
So guys what is it?
Can I get a longer stud or what?

i have the spacer on and the stud length is fine... hmmm.. i really dunno, pictues would be helpful. Many of us on here use that filter assembly courtesy of autozone and ours all work.. you might want to ask 90RS305, he is pretty darn good at that stuff, Shifty is pretty godly himself too... maybe the filter is installed incorrectly, or maybe if you bought a new one, you bought the 4" not the 3" other than that, i have no idea...

As long as it's a 3" tall filter you should be fine. Just unscrew the stud out of the base as far as you can go. When I had a drop base cleaner like that, I had to unscrew it but it still didn't fit so I took the stud out and bent it in a vice to make it straighter and longer: worked good.

How far off is it? if you can even just barely get a few threads to stick out of the hole then you're good. Once you start threading the wing nut on there it'll all squash down and be nice and snug. I've installed quite a few of these now, and have had to use a few nifty tricks...

I agree with the last two posts. Try backingout the stud a bit so that you can grab just a few threads. The open element will squish down a bit and become snug.

You could probably make your own aircleaner stud with some rod and a few dies for cutting the threads. I think the standard aircleaner wing nuts have the same thread as the tbi so you could just bend a section of threaded rod to the right shape and use that instead.

I got it on and it feels like it doing some good.
Heres another question while Im at it.
Should I spring for the K&N filter or not?
I would prefer answers from people actually running one on there car.
Thanks in advance

Don't bother with the K&N it's not worth it. Save the 40 bucks or so for something better. Plain old filter will work just fine and cost about 5 bucks.

Is there really that little noticeable effect from it?
Or are they just for the guys trying to suck every last bit of power out of their motor?

It won't really give you any power. The good part of them is that they are re-useable. You can clean it and reuse it. You need to eliminate a ton of limiting factors in your engine and the air filter is not one of them.

I'm not TBI, but I know what I do would carry over. I took out the stock studd and threw it away. I got a new stud from the local store. This one was just one really long threaded thing, with a wing nut. I trimmed it down, and now I can switch my stock air cleaner and my open element back and forth with no troubles at all.
