gas milage

not sure where this would go, but anywho...

just made a trip from michigan to MA.. and was thrilled to get
27-30 mpg....
My engine is basically stock with a Jet chip and no smog stuff but was still thrilled just the same,
this was a brutal drive at 14-16 hours one way, not a trip I would recommend to anyone....
Just thought I was pass along the info

Sounds about right. With the stock chip you may have even seen better.

how many miles are on your TBI?

I'm contemplating making a long trip and I see that people that have been taking long trips often never break down.

I did loose the altenator on the way back, but it was still the original, so 90 bucks is a small price to pay...

So I figured hey a 15 year alt gotta go sometime....

When my car had a cat-back and an open element I would get 31+mpg on the highway with my T5 and stock 3.08's. That was on highway trips of course. At that time my car had only 21k on her.

Does the car get better mileage with the stock aircleaner or an open element?

I was planning on taking a trip to NV here within the next month and am trying everything to get the best mileage as possible, even little differences will matter.

I have an open element, didn't check milage before, but it only makes sense that if the car can breathe better, than it would get better milage.

Now whether it's 2 or 5 I don't know, unless you go all oiut and change the rest of the EXHAUST system, it probably won't make a big difference.

Think about, it doesn't matter how much air you can take in, how much can you get rid of....is the real key...

I too would like to know what stickers had on them....

But I now know I won't change a thing on this engine, yea it's JUST a 305 TBI....

But I'm planning on a 70 monte carlo here in the next couple years and I'll build that for speed......

So I'll just look pretty going down the road in my IROC.....

Seems most people that have great gas milage numbers live in and drive on mostly flat roads in mostly flat terrain. Everybody that gets 25mpg or higher should take a trip to East Tennessee, Western N. Caralina, Southeastern Kentucky among others mountainous eastern states. I know there are other areas out west that are just as bad and probably worse. I was just pointing out that where you live has as big of effect on mpg just as the state of tune your car is in.

My 355 TBI still got over 14 MPG pulling a 5,000# trailer though the rockies.

Fast355, you must have been running deisel in that thing. No really torque is where it's at.

Nope just a torque monster small block at the time. That and the gearing to keep me in my power band. With 3.08s running 60 mph in 3rd (I never tow in OD) I am turning 2,200 rpm. In 2nd I am only turning 3,500 RPM. You can see where gearing is really helping me. Combined with the fact that my peak torque with the ported 193s and LT1 cam was only at like 3,000 rpm where it was making 335 ft/lbs with a very broad power band ( the 117* lobe seperation helps this).

Torque is exactly why the LO3 gets the mileage it does. Most seem to get better than the 2.8 V6 of the time. The LO3 has a little torque but where it counts combined with tall gears which equals great fuel mileage.

Don't forget the flat roads too. The best I have been able to do is about 23mpg on a long trip but most of the interstates I drive on look like this /VVVVVVV\____/VVVVVV\__/VVVV\_.

Hills don't really hurt fuel mileage that much though. The energy you use to climb the hill becomes potential energy. The potential energy is released as you go down hill. In effect you use a little more power to go uphill then use less on the way down.

(insert best deliverance accent here) Yerr not from around heer are ya?

No really, the hills really do make a big difference. in an ideal world, you would be right. The difference is that you usually end up over doing it up a hill, and then underdoing it down the hill that results in basically moving the throttle alot more than you would have to "idealy". I always get about 2 mpg better milage anytime I go out of state where it's flatter. By the way I live in West Virginia, smack dab in the middle of the appalachians.

Maybe the difference is I will always give it a little gas for about 20 seconds before I hit the hill, maybe pick up 10 mph as I hit the base then let the momentum carry me up the hill. Then coming down I ease off just before I crest the hill. Alot of it has to do with how you drive as you stated.

I have almost the exact identical car as Shifty (minus nifty "power" options) and my last road trip from Utah I went 36mpg. Might I add, 45% of the trip was VERY hilly. I kid you not though, I still had 1/4 of a tank left and I had already gone 411 miles on the tank In the city I average about 21-22 like most here though...
