tbi rich fuel

i had this posted in the carb section before i saw this area.

i have a 1992 firebird with a 305 tbi and 173000 miles and it is running so rich i can smell it strong in the exhaust, it is just pouring fuel into the engine. i have replaced the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator. i bought an oxygen sensor but haven't installed it yet. i willl tommorrow. i don't have any engine warning lights so no codes. until i figure this out its a garage queen. unfortunately its summertime

It sounds like you need a good old tune up. I would replace the plugs, wires, 02, cap, coil and rotor. I would also get out an ohm/volt meter and check the CTS sensor and TPS for functionality. A TBI rebuild kit would also be benificial. I know this sounds like you will be throwing parts at the car but chances are there is more than one thing causing your problem. With that many miles replacing some simple parts is preventative maintenance as well as some piece of mind.

this is probibly a dumb question what is the cts sensor i'm guessing coolant temp. i'll do a complete tune up on it and see if that helps.

The coolant temp sensor is located on the front of the manifold just to the side of the thermostat housing. It is in a vertical posistion. You can test one with hot water, cold water, thermometer and a volt meter. The resistance values are listed here on TGO somewhere. If they don't match up for a given temperature than it is safe to say that the sensor is bad.

well i did a tune up. idle is better but , the injectors are still putting too much fuel in the motot. ol plugs were loaded up black. still running to rich. runns better if while running you unplug one of the injectors, the idle drops from 850 to 500.
i think i might just take it in and put it on a dianostic machine..

is there a way to test the computer?

Don't underestimate the importance of the CTS. Often, when they fail they tell the ecm that the motor is stone cold, so it adds LOTS of fuel. Have you checked it as described above?

Build a winaldl cable, hook it to a laptop and check out your BLMs and see if even the computer is trying to compensate.

Cable is like $10, sofware free, and hopefully u know someone with a laptop.
