k so which forum
okay im not requesting a chip cause at this moment i dont have what i want to get one but....when i am ready where would i post a request for a burn for my tbi....im thinking headers,exaust,intake,305tpi heads, and mabey a cam??? dont know about tbi uprgades yet....if u guys could give me some help as to where to go to get a good tune, and not something like hypertech or whatever. oh yeah and i was gonna take some stuff out like smog, lower thermostat, speed limiter etc...but im sure thats simple.

yeah dont know about that if i could afford to fly someone out to ky where its not warm in the cold months then i could probably afford the laptop and tunner....see i just spent about 1300 on my brand new desktop i put togather and cant afford a lap top and programmer to itll take me awhile to afford the heads and cam for it right now im workin on getting some small stuff then the headers and intake. but im affraid after i get the headers if i get the intake it will be running lean after all the extra air in and out and no comp. for fuel being made so im looking into the chip thing after headers but prob. before intake,heads,and cam cause this will be a daily driver so the less down time and the better driveability the better.

the laptop required to tune our cars will only run you like 100 bucks. dont need anything special.

come on guys theres more prom burning gurus here then ive then ive ever seen at a forums before im sure someone has an answer other than just burn it your self cause i would love to learn eventually i just dont have the funds and probably wont anytime soon.

my bad didnt even see that last reply before i reposted cause i didnt realize it had been moved....yeah but the programmer im looking at another 300 then the cables and stuff thats another chunk all togather im probably looking at at least 500 and for that i can get my intake, a set of 305 tpi heads, and probably a set of headers too.

i remember seeing something somewhere from a link in the forums to a tbi guy who will burn custom proms and if u pay like 50 bucks extra u get unlimited tunes...

You can get a burner for 80 bucks at www.moates.net Go ahead and wast your money on the mail order tune, just don't complain here when it doesn't run right.
If you want to make power with FI you have to be able to control it. If you can't tune FI it's like having a carb that you can't change the jets in. No one in their right mind would take a carb and mail it off to get the jets changed by someone that has never even seen the car, let alone know how it runs. So why would you let someone do the same with your FI setup that is 100 times more complicated?

k fellas ive been reading in the stickies and other articles all day and im thinkin of tryin this out if for nothing else just to change what they call the flags and constants....this surely cant be too hard then i can do that w/ out the scanner but w/ just a burner till i get the cash and come across a good deal on a scanner or a laptop. i was just thinkin that that guy on tbichips or whatever it was did good work and what not i would never buy just a preporgramed hypertech chip or what ever that they dont take anything other then make model and year of the car. but as i said ive been reading some in here and alot of it is still very very confusing w/ the tables and such but ive never really done much mechanical work on my car either i would have to have someone help w/ the bigger stuff like changin the heads and cam when i get there.....its not that i wouldnt or dont wanna learn about the mechanical stuff but my dad who used to mess w/ cars alot growing up is now quadrapledic and cant really show me these things....but enough of that ill tackle those hurdles as i get to them i guess ill get my headers then the programmer.
one more thing though im reading these and noticing by the baud rate how much slower the tbi computers r from the tpi computers would a laptop and scanner program really even help me that much???

oh and i just wanna thank u guys for the help uve given me so far and i dont want it to seem like im just being stuborn its just a money factor type thing im sure everyone has delt w/ or is dealing w/ keeping me from diving right into it all. also i just wanna let u guys that its people like u willing to help w/ im sure alot of repetitive questions....and stuff u guys think of as second nature and how it makes people like me wanna learn when u guys are the only ones i can learn from when they have no one else to teach them....thanks again

no no it wasnt like that at all i wasnt wanting anyone in here to burn a chip for me i dont even have the cash for that right now i was just asking to see if there was anyone or any company who actually takes the time and does good work as far as taking what u have and making it work not just saying okay what car and engine do u have...no i wasnt tryin to get u all to burn me a chip sorry if it came off that way.

For a FREE scanner program check out http://winaldl.joby.se/ , ther are schematics to build your own cable, or you can buy one of premade ones on ebay for 35-50 bucks.
If you don't have a laptop, keep an eye out for a really old crappy one. All it needs is at least a couple hundred meg of hard drive space, a 133 processor, serial port, and printer port. A usb port would be nice, but not necesary. They are getting harder to find, just because they are so old and obsolete. I got 2 given to me by family members, because they couldn't get more than 5 bucks out of them.
You'll be able to free up as much power with chip tuning as you will with a catback or open element. Once you get into major changes like heads and cam, you absolutly have to be able to tune it, you'll give up 50-100 hp to almost all of your power, if it won't get out of the driveway.
Taking baby steps is the right idea. Start with disabling your speed limiter, or setting it really low just to see if it works. Then ask questions like, how do I change my timing, and how do I richen or lean out my top end. These are the kind of questions we can answer and will do so gladly.

yeah just a couple of min ago i placed bids on two lap tops on ebay very low low since my funds are very low doubt ill get either one....but one has a 600 and some mhz w/ 100 mb ram and 2 usb ports the other is a really fast one compared to that i think like 800 and somethin w/ one serial and one usb and then like 256 ram both have plenty of hard drive in em.... but i wont need a wb o2 sensor will i for decent performance cause those i really expensive even used and i doubt ill ever have the funds for that any time soon.... but like i asked prior are all the constants really easy to change im guessin??
oh and i searched some old threads about my ecm and chip the 1228746 $61 and dl the stock .bin and a stock i belive xdf that i can view on a web page just to see it. (still dont understand any of it but id figure id try and learn some before i save for the programmer since i cant mess anything up just on my pc before i actually burn one) what free program for windows do u guys recomend right now till i can afford to buy the programmer that comes w/ one from moates where i can actually see these in the proper form and what mask i think its called do i need so that it formats for my car?? i know these are alot of questions when im not actually creating yet but i wanna start to learn so im not so overwhealmed later. thanks so much guys!!

sorry i keep posting so quick but im looking at tunnercat site i belive and alot of the stuff i thought where switches are constants so i guess both is what ill be changing at first if its easy but i know ill need alot of help and u guys to double check everything in my 2d and 3d tables

Those laptops are way too good for chip burning, they'll work as long as they have the right ports, but you don't need somthing that nice. Set your sights lower and save your money.
Tuner cat is great, but it cost money.
You want to use tunerpro, it's free, and is actually easier to use onece you get the hang of things. http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/

yeah thats cool about using the new chip i can afford that im sure but where can i find that $61.xdf to play w/ i found one but it just opens up as a web page it wont let me dl it?? i may buy the tunercat program but right now ill use the freebie to play around w/ and get familar, but if it has all the same features as tuner cat ill keep it. thanx

oh and yeah those laptops where still very very cheap like in the cents or low dollar range and nr on ebay i put my max. bid up one has 2 days and some hrs and one still has 5 days and some thats y i said i will probably not win on them cause i could only bid in the double digits not tripple and im sure each will bring at least one hundred although the 600 mhz ones bat. wont hold a charge only works w/ wall plug so i may get luck and just use an adapter or buy a bat. for it.

k i think i figured out how to dl as a .xdf i had to use wellget a dl manager but when i load that and open the bin and click somethin like egr it just comes up w/ a box that has a place to click "set" then a save and cancel button??? i understand if these dumb questions r pissin u guys off but i just wanna start to try and tackle some stuff other wise i will be so dumbfounded when i comes time to actually burn one ill have no car for along time and it will be soooo frustrating.
