I've had problems similar to that, but it was always something different.

Anyway, start off with the most obvious things. How long has it been since the car's had a tune up (spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, PCV valve, fuel filter, etc.)? Have you checked timing? Checked for vacuum leaks, like cracked or unconnected vacuum lines? Checked fuel pressure, or watched the injector spray at idle (should be a fine conical spray with an occasional drip)?

Does the idle always seem to do that, or is it just when it's cold, or after it's warmed up, or what? Just trying to get a better idea of the problem.

well the cold start dont seem to be workin as good as it used too. It will idle up then drop back down and idle rough, then after it gets warmer the idle starts to surge. I checked the CTS and cleaned the IAC today. It still hasnt changed. Tomorrow im going to check for vaccum leaks and fuel pressure.

mine did similar...it was my egr valve opening prematurely..disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the egr and try to start the car and drive it...this will let you know if it has something to do with the egr...i blocked mine off and did away with it since it has no smog system and it runs great now...try that its easy and a quick diagnostic to start trouble shooting with...I accidently stumbled upon my problem when i was doing some engine work and revved the engine to the rpm that it started surging at and felt under the egr valve on the diaphram and it was open all the way when it was supposed to be closed causing symptoms of a vacuum leak....your prob may be as simple as replacing your egr valve or a vacuum line...

Sounds like your on the right track. Right now it sounds to me like a vacuum leak, but you never know. Don't forget to check your intake manifold and TBI unit gaskets as well. Just spray carb cleaner around the intake and base of the TBI unit with carb cleaner, while listening for a serious drop in idle. If it drops when spraying in a certain area, there's your leak.
