cam question

i've got an 89 firebird formula with the tbi 305 and i wanna do some minor performance mods, can i put an ls1 cam in or is an lt1 cam just as good?
or is there a better cam that i should use. your input is greatly appreciated because i know nothing about what is the best cam for a 305. the engine is completely stock except for an open element air filter.

Your block uses hydraulic roller lifters, so you want a power peak at under 6000 rpm before valve float occurs. Also, you've got TBI so you want something reasonably "tuning friendly".

The stock heads will give you clearance problems (spring retainers will hit the valve seals) if you go with more than 0.470" lift or so (I've never checked this personally, but that's what the people on here say).

So... the "best" cam for you would be something in the 205 - 215 degrees @ 0.05" lift range (on the intake) and the lift should be close to, but under ~ 0.470".

That would give you a power peak at 5500 rpm or so (but your stock heads won't support a power peak that high) and it should be relatively easy to "tune" the chip.

Pick something in that range. I don't know **** about the ls1 cam fitting your block though, but I know some of the lt1 cams are a good choice.
