car running too hot?
Hey guys just recently changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor just some normal AC delco plugs anyway my car usually stayed at 220 on the guage after i changed the plugs it started to go passed 220 in town or at a slow speed. i changed the thermostat to a 180 (had a 195 in it) and it runs real cool on the highway (160-180) but today when i was in town or drivin around my neighborhood after driving about 75 miles on the highway it started to warm up again 220+ not to the red yet but still kinda worries me. should i be concerned? or any suggestions would be awsome. thanks guys.
not to worry, yet. The cooling fan wont come on until the temperature reaches somewhere 230ish. Someone will correct me here cause I can't remember exactly. If temperature went over that, and the fans didnt come on then it would be a problem.
Best way to solve your problem if you do a lot of sity driving would be to put a manual switch in the car so you can turn the fan off and on at will......
Or a lower temp hypertec fan switch can help
To elborate more, the low temp thermostat would not prevent it from getting hotter during slow city driving. It will allow the coolant to start to run through the engine at a lower temperature. And when driving on the highway, the car will run at 180 degress now instead of 195.
Is your air damn under the car is good condition, by the way?

The hypertech fan switch would screw into the side of the block where the existing fan switch is. Not that tough of a job. That'd probably be your best bet. Direct replacement if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, it will screw right into the block but you are going to have to rig the connection as the connector will not likely match the stock one if it is still in good shape. All in all, not a huge deal to do except that getting to that switch on the block is a royal PITA. Expect to top off your coolant after the fact and WEAR GLASSES!
If you get the new fan switch and a lower t-stat, life should be peachy. Don't go too low on the stat though. You want the car to get out of closed loop for efficent operation.

Hypertech has a cool fan switch that I have installed that kicks the fan on at about 170. Just go to their site and if I remember correctly, they only have 2 available. I used the advice on this forum to get mine. Once I installed it, no more overheating problems.

BTW, I left my T-stat at stock specs and just used the new switch to kick the fan on at a lower temp.
