Timing at the dissy

hey guys. just wondering what the advantage of timing our cars at the dissy is as opposed to doing it in the computer, seems to me you would want the dissy at 0* and set up your curves in the ecm right?

Well off the top of my head if you set the dist. at 0 and depending on the advance of the cam if may not start. The computer (in the start cycle) takes the base setting off the chip and doesn't add any advance till the engine hits 400 RPM. I had to set mine set at 6 deg to start it at 0 it didn't even try to start just rolled over and over....in so saying depends on the cam.

With the cam that I had in my old 305, I ran 16* initial timing at the distributer. It was the only way that it would fire right up on a cool morning.

I've found the same thing with all the motors I've tuned. They just start better with about 10 degrees of timing at the dissy. Just make sure that you set your base timing in your chip.

oh okay so its primarily a starting thing and less of a driving thing. k that makes sense. Tunerpro will automatically add my base timing to my timing tables right? meaning after it is set in the constants.

im learning bit by bit, pretty sure i have the fueling side of things learned pretty well, it's pretty cut and dry stuff especially with a WB. Now im learning about spark timing, one of these days i have to learn how to understand cams lol.
