I need sugestions for engine swap

My 91 lo3 is burning oil and it isn't pretty. Need a new engine. I don't know if I want to stay with TBI or go with TPI or Holley blah blah. I live in NJ and want to pass emmisions testing. I would like to build a 383 or 355. By the way, this is my 100th post :-)
I would really like to get speed density TPI. Also I'm looking at a lot of crate motors, any sugestions? Should I just get a 383 crate w/ or w/o vortec heads?

What is your budget? What HP level?

The 330HO can be bought from http://www.sdpc2000.com/ for $2080.00 <cr>
Another $150 for a Vortec intake. <cr>
Another $100 for a harmonic balancer. <cr>
Another $??? for 2 80lbs/hr injectors. <cr>
Another $??? for custom reburn of Prom to match new engine. <cr>

I don't have a budget since I have a year to think about it. I want at least 350hp street legal pass NJ emmisions.

I have a couple guys looking for a 93 LT1. The only problem with that is the fabrication of so many parts and I can't reuse my SLP headers. But if the price is right I might do it. I like that 330hp 350. What would I need to bolt that in and get it running? I know I'd need a new manifold and TB. I was thinking about getting something like edelbrock or holley pro injection. You people need to have more ideas than this come on!

I'm considering the new 383 torque crate motor from Chevy.
325 horses and 415 lbs. of torque with a power band suited for tbi.
It makes peak power at 4800rpm.
Add a holley tbi and you you'd have a solid motor.
Change the somewhat tame cam if you want more top end power.

this is what id do
355 short block (roller), quality rebuild.. i dont think it has to be anything fancy
LT4 hot cam
Vortec heads with large valves installed and some port work
the Edelbrock vortec head specific Victor Jr single plane manifold (add cowl induction hood to the expenses)
holley 2" tbi or projection 4DI 700cfm system
and the requisite exhaust work

you could probably go larger than the LT4 hot cam now that i think about

I talked to sdpc2000 and they told me that their 330hp $2100 350 is designed for carb but that TBI will work. They said the heads were vortec and so the TBI manifold won't work because vortec heads don't have the EGR provision. He recomended Edelbrock's EFI. I'm also planing on adding NOS so the cam is coming out, that's another topic. The LT4 cam will pass the NJ dyno and sniff test? I wish I was in Florida, no testing, just registration. Makes me want to move just for this reason. I would like a 383 but I don't know if my trans is built up enough for the added torque. Let's say that is was strong enough. What kind of injection whould I put on it? Could I just get a dual plane (better idle and curve, not so peak power) manifold, a holley 670cfm TB, 80lbs injectors, and a reprogramed chip? Is that all I'd have to do to pass sniff sniff? Thanks for the time guys.

Holley 4di 900cfm system. I wish they had a 800cfm system. Do you guys think with that 330hp 350 that the 900cfm would be too big? I think I'm going to stick with the stock system and just get that engine and get the 700cfm 4di system. I just want to know what you guys think about the 900cfm system and if that's overboard for my clean sniff test passing 350.

Yup, the 900 is a little more than needed for mild 350 horse motor. TBI cfm ratings seem to be a little the underated side, with alot of people finding the 700cfm to be more than enough to feed to decent motor. As for passing the sniffer, you wont find someone who will give you a definite answer. Too many variables to consider. But you -should- have no major problems as long as you keep your cat, egr, and are running a good air/fuel ratio across the board. I passed with flying colors in my 89, with a built 350 and believe it or not, stock tbi at the time. I found the sniffer test to be very forgiving around here. IM240.

You could just do what I'm doing, buy a 400 small block out of a vette, bore and stroke it, until it's a 427, then slap on an Edelbrock duel quad manifold with two throttle bodies attached. But it's been giving me trouble, alot of work needs to be done to make the manifold work right.

You want a good horsepower engine and don't want to spend crap loads go with the 350HO from www.paceparts.com Thats the one I am getting. Its the same engine JPrevost was talking about except at paceparts.com its 1,999.00 and I know a intake manifold that will fit with ur tbi, those vortech heads and still have your EGR setup. Its an Edelbrock Performer and the part number is #2116 Look it up. I talked to a guy that got this same engine, kept tbi and has that intake on it. Everything bolts right up. If I was you I would get this engine, get yourself a holley 670cfm tb unit, 88lb injectors that are flow matched, aftermarket fuel pump (Edelbrock or somethin, not anything with a crazy psi level),accel or MSD distributor and maybe a MSD coil, wires, Good set of SLP or Edelbrock Headers and a custom prom burned and I would find someone locally or in the state that can put your car on a dyno to test it. This my man is the perfect 350 setup. If you want to go further, get it bored over .030 or .060 if you get bored with the 350 and throw some forged piston and some PD rods and strong rings and go with whatever NOS shot you want. Now tell me this engine isn't a flawless TBI 350 waiting to be built....and I will build it.

Just to clarify - The edelbrock vortec intake #2116 does NOT have EGR provisions. Niether do the vortec heads. Everything does not just bolt up either. There is some modification neccessary, but it's nothing too difficult. Z28 or I can answer any of your questions.
